The second round of the Tour Championship will be played out in Atlanta on Friday and by the end of that we will be 36 holes from knowing who will walk off with the $18m bounty and the FedExCup title for 2022.
Those who got themselves into contention in the opening round on Thursday will be looking to consolidate their position on Friday while the players who didn’t get into the mix in the first round will need a big 18 holes on Friday.
Round 1 Recap
After 18 holes of the final round of the season Scottie Scheffler holds a five shot lead. He opened the tournament two in front on 10 under and now sits on 15 under, five ahead of East Lake specialist Xander Schauffele. He is a shot clear of US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatick while Patrick Cantlay and Joaquin Niemann sit on eight under, seven off the pace. Rory McIlroy, Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im are all on seven under.
It wasn’t a great start for us on the betting front to this tournament with Billy Horschel producing one of the higher scoring rounds of the day despite the soft conditions which led to good scoring. That meant that he had no answer to the four under shot by Tom Hoge so our first two ball bet this week is a loser. On the outright front, Aaron Wise sits in a tie for third without the bonus shots added so hopefully he can kick on from there.
Friday Betting
We have a second round leader market to get stuck into but the big question is whether anyone can get the better of Scottie Scheffler in it. He holds a five shot lead which started out as a two shot lead so whether someone can claw him in over the space of 18 holes has to be open to debate. Unfortunately that is reflected in the extremely skinny prices and we’re not going to get rich backing Scheffler to stay in front. Realistically it is only Schauffele within five of him as well so it isn’t like there is a queue of players within reach. I’ll leave the second round betting for the two balls.

Friday 2 Balls
The 29 players are out in twos again on Friday but unlike on Thursday when they went out in FedExCup standings order for this second round they go out in line with their position on the leaderboard. That means that the last pair out onto the golf course is Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele who will tee off at 18.55 BST with Matthew Fitzpatrick and Joaquin Niemann out 10 minutes earlier. Cameron Smith and Rory McIlroy go out alongside each other for the second round in a row in what might be the pick of the pairings. I’ll take one bet on Friday.
J.T Poston vs Tom Hoge
Match tees off at 17.45 BST
Two men who enjoyed decent opening rounds were J.T Poston and Tom Hoge and they will go out alongside each other for the second round with the aim for both being another good round to bump them further up the FedExCup bonus standings.
These two men began the week at level par and one under respectively and now start out five under but that is still 10 shots off the lead so winning the tournament remains a bit of a pipedream but a decent round for either can have them earning plenty more cash come the end of the week. I took Hoge on in the opening round and I’m going to do it again. He lost strokes on the field on the greens but his long game was in good shape, however I think his long game was only at the level it was because the course was so damp as he has lost strokes to the field from tee to green in seven of his last nine starts. It isn’t expected to be as soft here so he might be found out over these 18 holes. Poston has been much more consistent in the long game department for a while now which led to a runner up at River Highlands and a win at John Deere over the last couple of months. He carded five under where he picked up shots on the field on the greens and with his all-round game in better order than that of Hoge I think even money on Poston winning this match looks worth taking.
