UCI Cycling – Tour de France 2017 Stage 7 – Betting Preview

Tour de France 2017 Stage 7 takes place on Friday 7th July. It looks like being another bunch sprint. Hopefully, there is no big incident at the end as in stage 4.

Tour de France 2017 Stage 7 – The Profile

Stage 7 is another long one at 213.5kms. The stage takes the riders from Troyes to Nuits-Saint-Georges.

The first 130kms of the stage see the riders climb very gradually from 108 metres to 475 metres above sea level.

A quick descent takes the riders to the base of the days only classified climb at 147.5kms – the Cote d’Urcy. From here the riders are on a plateau for 10kms before descending to a flat section that takes the race to the finish line.

The terrain suggests the classic Tour stage with a break away followed a bunch sprint. With Sagan and Cavendish  out of the race and Ben Swift and John Degenkolb both injured the FDJ, Quick Step and Katusha will be licking their lips. They know their sprinters have a greater chance of stage glory now.

One caveat – Sagan and Cavendish’s teams will not partake at the front of the peloton to chase the break. This potentially robs the peloton of some firepower and gives the break on stage 7 a slightly greater chance of getting to the line first.

Tour de France 2017 Stage 7 – Favourites

Marcel Kittel (Quick Step-Floors) won his 2nd stage of the 2017 Tour on Thursday. Like his earlier win his team weren’t fantastic in the final 3kms. In stage 7 he did a lot of the work himself and trusted his ability to win out. In the end he won with ease and must be favoured once more on Friday. Odds for stage 7 are 1.83 = win only bet.

Arnaud Demare (FDJ) was 2nd to Kittel in stage 6 and also won the Intermediate Sprint as he continues his quest for the Green Jersey. Demare’s FDJ team were probably the best of all of the teams in the final part of the stage. However, Demare didn’t have the speed to hold off Kittel. Stage 7 odds are 3.75 – also win only odds and as I don’t think he can beat Kittel in thsi type of sprint avoid.

Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) grabbed another podium place with 3rd on stage 6. He looked gutted on the line as Kittel seemed to appear from nowhere. Greipel is quick but he just doesn’t look as sharp as Kittel. A podium place is a strong possibility on stage 8 but I doubt he can win the stage. Odds at 7.0 look fine for the EW bet.

Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto-NL Jumbo) came 6th with a late charge on stage 6. He followed Kittel but was left in his wake. Again, as mentioned previously, he is showing his inexperience in Grand Tour sprints. I feel next year he will be much more competitive. Odds are 17.0 but not for me

Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) nabbed 5th place on stage 6 when I was hoping for a place. Still, he seems to be getting into the right position now to be a threat at the end of stages and is in the mix for that 3rd place. Like stage 6 Bouhanni starts stage 7 with odds of 21.0. I tipped him yesterday but will hold off for stage 7.

Michael Matthews (Sunweb) produced another solid result on Thursday with a 7th place finish. He is probably Demare’s most serious challenger for the Green Jersey assuming they both make it to Paris. The run in on stage 7 doesn’t suit Matthews at all so not for me. 34.0 has no potential for a return.

Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Merida) got bumped at the last major turn on stage 6 and lost about 25 places. This took him out of contention for the stage win. He will be looking to be in the mix once more on Friday. Once more Colbrelli can be backed at 51.0 – he is better than that but probably looking ta 4th or 5th place on the stage.

Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) was 4th on stage 6 and does seem to be improving as the race progresses. His Katusha team did a decent job in the final 10kms or so. Still, I don’t think he has the pure pace right now to get onto the podium. Kristoff can be backed at 17.0 so the EW works but this is another bet thats not for me.

The stage will be won by the sprinters so there will be no outsiders section in this stage preview.
