The second day of the UK Championship takes place inside the Barnican Centre in York on Sunday when four more matches will be played out across the two sessions of play with the second quarter the focus of attention.
That means that the headline attractions on Sunday are the former winners Mark Allen and Mark Selby and both have awkward tests ahead of them. There is a decent supporting cast on what looks like a decent day of snooker.
Afternoon Session
Mark Allen vs Jackson Page
The main table will be occupied by the former champion Mark Allen who will be looking to make it into the last 16 of the opening Triple Crown event of the season when he takes on a dangerous qualifier in the form of Jackson Page.
Allen hasn’t had a great campaign so far by his standards but he suggested that he had found something at the Champion of Champions that he could work with without actually pointing out what it was. He will need to be sharp here because Page came through qualifying in impressive style, beating Hossein Vafaei in the final qualifying round. Page likes the big stage and isn’t afraid to take care of the big names on it and if Allen is slightly off it or goes into that negative mode he could be vulnerable here. Page doesn’t have a lot to lose from here and that only makes him even more dangerous. I think at the prices the Welsh ace is worth a go here.
Ali Carter vs Ryan Day
The match over on table two on Sunday afternoon sees Ali Carter looking to make it through to the second round of the tournament when he goes up against a Ryan Day who is no stranger to going well in this competition.
This should be a decent match if Day brings his best to the party. Carter won the Championship League this season but hasn’t done a huge amount since then. Day hasn’t really offered too much either but he did have a decent run in qualifying for this and that should have given him some confidence coming into this one. Carter is one of the seeds I thought might be vulnerable in this round to a player who is match sharp from the qualifiers. In saying that, Day was probably one of the qualifiers which didn’t inspire me much so I’m happy to take a watching brief on that one.
