US Open Tennis 2022 – Day 7 Tips and Betting Preview

The second week of the US Open gets underway on Sunday and with us now being down to the last 16 of both of the singles draws the action all takes place on the two main show courts at Flushing Meadows which elevates the profile of the tournament.

We saw a dramatic first week in New York and although a number of big names have fallen in that time, the openness of both singles draws should ensure we see a lot of competitive action over the course of the day.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

The action on the main court begins with the French Open finalist Casper Ruud on show. The number five seed will look to make a second Grand Slam quarter final of the year when he takes on Corentin Moutet before the home star Coco Gauff, who must be wondering what she needs to do to be involved in the night session now that Serena is out, takes on Shuai Zhang. The night session begins with the match we all want to see when Daniil Medvedev meets Nick Kyrgios which means it could be a late night for Ons Jabeur and Veronika Kudermetova who meet to round off the play on this court.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

The other four singles matches all take place on the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Sunday and they come one after the other with no designated night session scheduled. The men get the play underway when Matteo Berrettini takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for a place in the quarter final before the first women’s game on this court sees the Cincinnati champion Caroline Garcia going up against Alison Riske-Amritraj. The last of the men’s matches on this court sees the Montreal winner Pablo Carreno Busta looking to make it back into the last eight here when he takes on Karen Khachanov. The action concludes with Liudmila Samsonova taking on Ajla Tomljanovic who is in action for the first time since she ended the career of Serena Williams.

Men’s Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of the day in the men’s draw with the first of them coming in the form of the match between Pablo Carreno Busta and Karen Khachanov which could turn very weird based on their displays this week. Khachanov actually leads the head to head between these two 5-3 but that is 4-1 on a hard court where the Russian has won the last four meetings without dropping a set, two of them last year at the Olympics and Indian Wells so there is something about the style of Khachanov on a hard and fast court which seems to catch the Spaniard out. Carreno Busta is a confident man after he won in Montreal last month but his match with Alex de Minaur in the previous round was very weird. PCB was cruising but then looked to hit some fatigue and almost ended up going to a fifth set where he would probably have been the outsider. Khachanov has been involved in a couple of weird matches himself but he could be the fresher man here having seen Jack Draper pull out in the third set of their clash in the previous round. The head to head record on a hard court and potential fatigue in the Spaniard makes me think Khachanov could be value here.

The other bet I’ll go with on the men’s side on Sunday comes in the night session clash between Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios which I don’t see ending before we go over the 40.5 mark. These two met in the Australian Open earlier in the year which Medvedev won 3-1 in a match which contained 41 games. Kyrgios was just working his way back from a light schedule then though and wasn’t in the kind of shape he is in now where he is taking things a lot more seriously. They also met in Montreal earlier in the US hard court swing where Kyrgios won in a three set match which had 31 games in it. I don’t see either of these two going without a fight and I do see a couple of tiebreaks – four of their nine hard court sets have gone the distance – so in a match I don’t see being won in straight sets over 40.5 games should land comfortably.

Women’s Betting

There is only the one that I like in the women’s draw on Sunday and that comes in the match between Liudmila Samsonova and Ajla Tomljanovic where I think the form of the Russian can hold up against the Australian who might forever be remembered for ending the Serena Williams career. To give credit where it is due to Tomljanovic, she played superbly against a Serena who wasn’t the finished article she was at Wimbledon and in Cincinnati but there has to be all kinds of comedowns from an occasion like that and I doubt the Aussie can play with the freedom of such an underdog tag here.

Samsonova has benefitted from the break of not being allowed into Wimbledon. The Russian is on a 13-match winning streak after winning the titles in Washington and Cleveland and in those matches she has dropped all of two sets and has Tomljanovic among her victims. The two met in the early stages in Washington where Samsonova won 46 63 62 and she hasn’t really looked back since with the likes of Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez among her victims. Samsonova has a 3.5 game handicap to cover here but even in losing a set to her opponent here in Washington she still covered it. I’ll back the Russian to cover it again.
