US Open Tennis – Day 9 Betting Preview

The quarter finals of the US Open begin in New York on Tuesday with half of the men’s and women’s draw being played out on the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Every singles match left in the tournament will now be played on Ashe and with the roof around we are guaranteed to remain on schedule which is good.

Roberta Vinci vs Angelique Kerber

The first match of the day looks an interesting one between last year’s runner up Roberta Vinci and the women who could well leave New York as the number one ranked player in the world in Angelique Kerber. Both women have looked brilliant so far in this tournament.

All things being equal you would think Kerber will win this but I remember giving Vinci no chance against Serena last year and she surprised me and the rest of the world and given that Kerber is a short price, giving up a big handicap or having to sort a quick win out to stay under the games line there is enough doubt to leave it alone.

Lucas Pouille vs Gael Monfils

If you want entertainment then this is the match for you as these two fast paced Frenchmen collide in what has the capacity to be one of the special matches. Pouille comes into the match off the back of that fantastic win over Rafael Nadal while Monfils has cruised through the draw in good style.

These two have only met once in their careers which was at the Australian Open last year and it went five sets. You would have to say Pouille has come on leaps and bounds since then while Monfils is in the form of his life at the minute so this is nicely set up.

I expect Monfils to win for a couple of reasons. I think he is going to come alive in this environment and entertain and also Pouille has had three five setters in a row which is likely to catch up with him at some point but I don’t see that happening before he wins a set. I’m amazed over 3.5 sets is even money here. These two are closer matched than that and that should show out on the court.

Caroline Wozniacki vs Anastasija Sevastova

The two surprise packages of the women’s draw open up the night session on Ashe with the former finalist Wozniacki taking on the woman who has already seen off Garbine Muguruza and Jo Konta in this tournament.

Wozniacki has looked very good in this tournament but I just wonder if that has been because she’s been an outsider with little to lose. Now she is the favourite with a huge improvement on her ranking up for grabs I wonder if she can play with the same freedom. Sevastova has played really nicely but she’s heading into unchartered territory here so this feels like another leave alone match to me.

Novak Djokovic vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

The last match of the day on Tuesday should be a cracker as the entertaining Tsonga looked to dethrone the defending champion Djokovic. Djokovic looked better than he has for a while against Kyle Edmund but I wonder how much the Brit believed he could win early on in that match.

You would think that Tsonga will believe he can win having beaten Djokovic six times in the past and at the very least he can run him close here. While Djokovic looked good against Edmund he still needed treatment early on in the match and he did go a break down in the third set. I’m not convinced Tsonga will let Djokovic off as easily here so the idea of this one going over 33.5 games looks realistic.

Their last meeting involved two tiebreaks and that bodes well for the overs because three of them means we could get the total covered in a straight sets win for either but I fancy we’ll see more than three sets.
