West Indies vs England – 1st T20 Betting Preview

England’s tour of West Indies concludes with three T20 matches and the first of those comes along in St Lucia on Tuesday. The tourists are still looking for their first series win on this part of their winter leg and this is their last chance to get one.

Having beaten England in the Test matches and held their own in a drawn ODI series, West Indies now embark on what many consider to be their strongest form of the game and one in which they are most comfortable.

West Indies

There has been a real spirit about the West Indies over the last couple of months and that has been good to see. You would expect their swagger and confidence to come to the fore now because this is their best format of the game. Admittedly one of the reasons why it is their best format is that they have their stars available for it which isn’t the case in this series, but the way they play their cricket is just so sorted to this game I don’t see that mattering too much.

This format of the game is designed for a party and there is nothing more that the Caribbean men enjoy than a party so they get into the spirit of things and are mighty tough to beat. They are the world champions in the format and enjoy the freedom and the atmosphere that these matches bring. They should be tough to beat here.

England

England are a decent enough side in T20 in their own right but it is still the format they take least seriously and that is evidenced once again by the players they have left out for these three matches. England have played a fair amount of cricket this winter but they don’t play again until May so it is a questionable move to allow so many to head off home early.

When players are rested though others get their chance and the one thing we have seen in the T20 Blast is that there is a queue of players looking to get into this England side. England need to make sure they are on it at all times with the ball in this match because we know West Indies will come at them. They will also need someone to take responsibility with the bat, something nobody did in the last ODI here on Saturday.

Team News

Andre Russell appears to have suffered another injury so he is expected to miss out which means West Indies may choose to keep their ODI side together and give them three more matches ahead of the World Cup.

Ben Stokes, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali are all going to be absent for England in this match. Sam Billings, Dawid Malan, Joe Denly and Chris Jordan are the men most likely to come in for them. David Willey could get a go too.

Betting

Regardless what happened prior to these matches I was always going to be on the West Indies in the T20 matches but when you consider how well they have played in formats that England would have the edge on them in, it becomes a no brainer to back the home side, even more so when you consider the absolute pig’s ear England made of the final ODI here on Saturday.

England haven’t been at their best on this tour and are without a number of their most influential players here. They have competitive men doing battle for them but they lack the Buttler’s and the Stokes of this world who can take matches away from teams in the space of 10 balls. West Indies look full of confidence to me and given their prowess in this format they look bigger than they should be at 4/5.
