The West Indies and India were frustrated by rain when they began their ODI series in Trinidad on Friday so both will be hoping they have more luck with the weather when the two sides go at it again at the same venue in the 2nd ODI on Sunday.
This is now effectively a four match series so there could well be a premium on winning this first match and drawing first blood and being in control of the series from the get go.
West Indies
In many ways we didn’t find out much about the West Indies in the 40 overs that we did see on Friday because they were in the field and by and large we can be pretty secure in our minds about their bowling attack. It is with the bat where we need to be able to judge them and that wasn’t possible due to the rain.
What we did see from the West Indies in that first game was a solid bowling effort and although they didn’t take the amount of wickets they would have liked it was clear there was a plan and that will bode well for them going forward if they can manage to continue executing the ideas and styles they put in place.
India
I would imagine India will have been quite frustrated when the rain came in the opening match. They had fought hard to get themselves into a solid position to launch from and just as the switch was getting turned the rain came and we were left hanging over how many they would have got on a tricky pitch.
That said it was a solid effort from India and they certainly needed that after the disappointment of their defeat in the Champions Trophy and with that put to bed now they can get on with concentrating on the future and ensuring they get back to the side they were. They remain heavy favourites for this series.
Team News
Given that the match was in the balance when the rain came in the first game I would imagine both teams would play the same sides unless there is a last minute injury. Rishabh Pant may have to wait for an ODI debut while Shannon Gabriel hasn’t been included in the squad for this match due to injury.

Betting
I took two bets in the first ODI and neither got going but what we saw suggested I was on the right lines given that India only had two sixes in almost 40 overs so I’m going to take the West Indies to hit the most sixes again for much the reason I took it on Friday and I will also back Ashley Nurse to be the top West Indies batsman, again for the same reasons. We saw the wicket turn on Friday and that should suit Nurse who is one West Indian who can play spin well.
I’m also going to add one bet to that with Shikhar Dhawan to score more than 32.5 runs. He is in such a rich vein of form at the minute. I was concerned with how he would adjust to the change in conditions but I needn’t have been as he clobbered 87 in the first game of the series. He has passed 33 in seven of his last eight 50 over innings so the 10/11 on him going over this line looks good to me.
