Wimbledon 2021 – Men’s Quarter Finals Tips and Betting Preview

The men’s quarter finals make up the singles action at Wimbledon 2021 on Wednesday when all four matches take place across the two main courts, which means at the end of the day we will know the semi-final line up.

We look to be heading towards a showdown between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday but there are still some big names looking to stop that from happening including two on Wednesday so we should get a competitive day of action.

Day 8 Recap

The women’s quarter finals were played out on Tuesday under the roofs of the two main show courts but they were largely drama free with all four of them being decided in straight sets and none of those sets being any closer than 6-4. All four favourites progressed as well with Ash Barty coming past Ajla Tomljanovic, Angelique Kerber overcoming Karolina Muchova, Karolina Pliskova beating Viktorija Golubic and Aryna Sabalenka seeing off Ons Jabeur.

That means it wasn’t a particularly good day for us betting wise with Jabeur losing the only match bet that we placed over the course of the day. It got worse when both our remaining outright bets disappeared too with Karolina Muchova failing to bring in her quarter bet and then Jabeur passing up a good chance to make the final when she couldn’t handle the power that came at her from Sabalenka.

Centre Court

Novak Djokovic vs Marton Fucsovics

The first quarter final on the Centre Court sees the defending champion Novak Djokovic taking on the only unseeded player left in the draw in the form of Marton Fucsovics for a place in the semi-final on Friday.

Djokovic is a past master at Grand Slam quarter finals while his Hungarian opponent will be competing in his first one here. It is hard to see anything but a Djokovic win here but he hasn’t been at his most elite impressiveness in this tournament which makes me feel a little uneasy about taking a handicap or anything. If I was forced to bet I’d side with Djokovic on the cap but Fucsovics has seen off Andrey Rublev, Diego Schwartzman and Jannik Sinner so far and has won a set in both meetings with the world number one so he merits enough respect for me to leave this one alone.

Roger Federer vs Hubert Hurkacz

The second quarter final on the main court is a similar one to the first one in that it is a clash between experience against youth as Roger Federer continues his search for a ninth Wimbledon title when he takes on Hubert Hurkacz who is in his maiden Grand Slam quarter final.

I don’t think we’ve seen vintage Federer in this tournament but his aura and grass court prowess has got him through to this quarter final. I think most judges would expect him to move through the gears now but we have to remember this is a player who hasn’t played much tennis in recent times so it might be that his elite level is not there at the minute. I’d still be surprised if Federer loses this but Hurkacz came past Daniil Medvedev fair and square in the previous round and came through the draw nicely prior to that so I think this might be a lengthy quarter final.

I suspect Hurkacz is going to win a set here and he can keep another one close enough for the over in games to land here. The line is 38.5 so four normal sets should be enough regardless of whether Hurkacz keeps one of the other sets close or not. This should be a good watch with both men looking to get to the net so I expect the serve to dominate for the most part and when all is said and done I think we’ll get to 39 games and beyond.

Court 1

Karen Khachanov vs Denis Shapovalov

The opening match on Court 1 on Wednesday sees two men looking to make it into a maiden Grand Slam semi-final when the Russian number three Karen Khachanov takes on the Canadian star Denis Shapovalov.

This should be another entertaining semi-final between two men who are clearly going to leave their all out on the court. My suspicion is that the Canadian is a little on the short side here but then Khachanov went five deep sets in the previous round on Monday and that might catch up with him. I’m still not convinced Shapovalov is the real deal on this surface but he has seen off a couple of seasoned campaigners with the minimum of fuss so he is probably the rightful favourite. My gut tells me to leave this one alone though.

Matteo Berrettini vs Felix Auger-Aliassime

The other quarter final over on Court 1 sees the Italian number one Matteo Berrettini looking to make it back to a Grand Slam semi-final when he goes up against the other Canadian left in the draw in Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The Italian has been in great form on the grass this year having won the tournament at Queens in the lead up to this event and has continued on his merry way here. He hasn’t dropped a set since the opening round of the tournament and now faces FAA who hasn’t won in straight sets since the first round of the competition. He did however beat Alexander Zverev in the previous round but Zverev was double faulting like a lunatic in the opening two sets of that match to help Auger-Aliassime on his way.

I fancy Berrettini to be too good for Auger-Aliassime here and although there is a chance of tiebreaks in the match I still think by the time the match is over the Italian can have covered a 4.5 game handicap here. I’m not sure I see the Canadian winning a set but if he does then the way Berrettini is serving I would be surprised if it isn’t a tiebreak. I fancy eventually Berrettini will get a feel for the serve of FAA and he can run out a comfortable winner.
