Wimbledon 2021 – Men’s Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

We know the identity of the women’s final at Wimbledon 2021 and on Friday we will find out who will compete in the men’s final of the penultimate Grand Slam title of the year when the semi-finals get played out on Centre Court.

We have two players who have been to this stage of a major championship before and two who will be competing at this part of an event of this stature for the first time so it will be interesting to see if experience reigns or youth.

Matteo Berrettini vs Hubert Hurkacz

The opening semi-final sees two players in their first last four clash at Wimbledon colliding when the Queens champion Matteo Berrettini takes on the Polish youngster Hubert Hurkacz who is looking to follow up his win in Miami earlier this year with his biggest title to date.

Berrettini has looked in decent touch ever since he stepped foot onto the grass at Queens and is a warm favourite to make it through to his first Grand Slam final. He has the advantage of having been to the last four of a Grand Slam before and even though he came on out on the wrong side of a US Open semi-final to Rafael Nadal. This is the biggest match in the career of Hurkacz but this is a man who won a maiden Masters 1000 title earlier in the year and who has knocked off Daniil Medvedev and an out of sorts Roger Federer in the last two rounds.

I don’t think Hurkacz is as unlikely to win here as the odds suggest but I’m much more comfortable taking two men who have served very well this fortnight to play out a lengthy contest. I don’t see this match being won in straight sets. I do see the sets which are played being tight with the serve dominating so I’m a little surprised we can get a 39.5 games line. Four sets should see that covered so I like the over in that market.

Novak Djokovic vs Denis Shapovalov

The second semi-final sees Novak Djokovic continuing his title defence when he meets the exciting and entertaining Canadian ace Denis Shapovalov, who will be competing in his first Grand Slam semi-final when he steps out onto the Centre Court.

Shapovalov came through a five-set epic against Karen Khachanov in the quarter final which is probably a negative for his chances of winning this match, although he is young and should be able to recover to at least do himself justice here. Prior to that quarter final, the Canadian saw off Andy Murray and Roberto Bautista Agut with the minimum of fuss. Djokovic has gone through the draw without too many issues but it is interesting that the only set he has lost in the Championships was in the first round against another left-hander in Jack Draper.

I would be surprised if Shapovalov can win three sets out of five against Djokovic but I do think he can take a set from him. There were times in the Djokovic match against Fucsovics in the quarter final where the Hungarian was giving as good as he was getting while Cristian Garin wasn’t a million miles away from pinching a set against the Serbian star either. Shapovalov has more weapons than both of those men which bodes well for him claiming a set if not more. I still think Djokovic is the one to be on here though but the odds against on over 3.5 sets feels a good play here.
