Tennis – Wimbledon Ladies Final – Serena Williams vs Angelique Kerber Betting Preview

Wimbledon Ladies Final

The 2016 Wimbledon ladies singles champion will be crowned on Centre Court at the SW19 complex on Saturday when Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber meet in their second Grand Slam final of the year.

The two met in Australia at the start of the year when Kerber edged out Williams in three epic sets in Melbourne and that only goes to set this one up nicely as the German looks for her first Wimbledon title and Serena her seventh.

Serena Williams

For the third time this year Serena begins a match one win away from equalling Steffi Graf’s haul of 22 major titles but having failed twice she will be hoping that it is third time lucky as she looks to win back to back Wimbledon titles for the third time in her career.

Serena had a few issues coming through the first week of this tournament but in the second week she has been dominant and blown away anyone who has had the misfortune of sharing the court with her. Svetlana Kuznetsova offered no obstacle in the last 16 while Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Elena Vesnina were ruthlessly dealt with in the quarter final and semi-final respectively.

Angelique Kerber

Having waited 10 years for her first major final a second one has come along inside six months for the German and she has made it into this one without dropping a set in the tournament so far which is a feat that has to be respected going into this final.

On her way to this final Kerber has come past the tough as teak Simona Halep and beaten Venus Williams so nobody can say she doesn’t deserve to be in this match and if she goes on to win the title she will certainly deserve it. To win two out of three Grand Slams would be a remarkable achievement.

Head to Head

These two have met seven times in the past. We all know that Kerber won their latest meeting which was in that Melbourne final which she won in three sets. Serena won five of the other six matches and her wins all came in straight sets. Kerber’s other win came in Cincinnati in 2012, that was also in straight sets.

Betting

We go into this final with a 25/1 betting ticket on Angelique Kerber very much alive and well and I’m hoping that she can emulate her triumph in Melbourne and see off Serena again and with that in mind I’m going to leave the match outcome alone.

I am going to take a bet though and that is to follow history in this final and go with under 21.5 games. Only one of the last nine Wimbledon finals have gone to three sets and in the two sets Serena won that year she won 6-1 and 6-2 but just suffered a blip in the middle set. This has been a match where when one lady gets on top they ram home the advantage and I can see that happening here.

Given the previous trend of this match being won in straight sets, the fact that Kerber is playing so well she hasn’t dropped a set yet and the fact that Serena is capable of dominating anyone I will take the unders here in the hope that it is Kerber who runs riot and that Serena has to wait another couple of months to equal Steffi’s Slam haul.
