The World Championship qualifying tournament continues on Friday with another 15 second round matches getting underway over the course of the day with eight of them finishing which means the players winning those games will be two wins from a place at the Crucible Theatre.
This is the fifth day of action in the competition and we have already seen plenty of great snooker and tons of drama and tension even though we are still with he lower ranked players taking to the stage. Much more of the same is expected on Friday.
Morning Session
Once again we have eight matches starting out in the morning on Friday and concluding in the evening with four of those being on streamed tables and four on the outside ones. The main table will see Anthony Hamilton looking to give his tour survival chances a boost when he takes on Steven Hallworth who has already guaranteed his place on the tour next season. Jimmy White came through a marathon match in the first round and his second round match against Ashley Carty will be on a streamed table with Jamie Jones facing Julien Leclercq on another. The other one sees Robbie Williams facing Manasawin Phetmalaikul.
This is a really good session actually, so much so that the match between two quality operators in Michael Holt and Oliver Lines doesn’t get a streamed table. Stan Moody is another watchable talent and his match against Dean Young is on the outside tables as well. Louis Heathcote will get his campaign underway in this session when he meets the Ukrainian amateur Iulian Boiko while the other match in the morning sees Jamie Clarke meeting Allan Taylor in another good game.

Afternoon Session
The former world champion Ken Doherty rolled back the years in the opening round and he will be on the main table on Friday afternoon in the set of matches which will conclude on Saturday afternoon. Matthew Stevens has been to a couple of world finals and he gets his quest to make it back to the Crucible underway when he takes on the amateur Simon Blackwell. He Guoqiang faces Liam Highfield on a streamed table too and two Chinese players face off on the other when Tian Pengfei played Gao Yang.
There would ordinarily be four matches on the outside tables but with the immediate suspension of the former champion Graeme Dott we are down to just three for the remainder of this session. Jiang Jun is one of the players starting out for the competition and he faces Andrew Higginson in a good looking game while Ma Hailong takes on Duane Jones in what could be a competitive contest. The other match sees Alfie Burden getting his World Championship started against Ian Burns.
Betting
I like Anthony Hamilton and wouldn’t want him to fall off the tour but I can’t not back against him when Steven Hallworth is 11/8 to win the match. Hallworth has already beaten a handy operator in Bulcsu Revesz and I mentioned when taking him to win that game how Hallworth is competitively sharp and playing with the house money having secured his spot on tour next season courtesy of the work he has done on the amateur circuit.
The same can’t be said about Hamilton. He has only won one match since the qualifying competition for the English Open which was back in the middle of September. That win was against Jimmy White who has recently confessed that he was experiencing a diagnosis of ADHD around that time so how much weight that win carries remains to be seen. Because he has lost so much this season, Hamilton hasn’t actually played a competitive match since the Welsh Open qualifying at the beginning of February and he has to be vulnerable against a confident operator who has already won a match this week. Hallworth for me.
