World Cup 2018 – Group A Final Matches Betting Preview

The first group to complete their matches in the World Cup is Group A and in terms of who goes through and who doesn’t there is nothing to play for as we already know that Russia and Uruguay will qualify from it.

They meet to decide the group winners in one of the matches played at the same time on Monday afternoon while Egypt take on Saudi Arabia in what will be the final match of the tournament for both sides in the other game.

Uruguay vs Russia

The main match to determine who tops the group is a clash between the entertainers of Russia and the dour boring style of Uruguay who really have not got going in the competition yet despite their two victories.

Russia went into the tournament with little expectation on them despite being the hosts but the way they powered past both Saudi Arabia and Egypt has got everyone believing they could surprise a number of sides in the knockout stages.

Uruguay went into the competition as the dark horses in the eyes of many judges but I don’t think you’ll find too many people who would not have thought they have been disappointing in scrappy, mundane 1-0 victories over the two weaker sides in the group. There is little doubt that they need to improve to justify their pre-tournament reputation.

Saudi Arabia vs Egypt

The two minnows in the group have to be disappointed with what they have produced to date and no side wants to play on the greatest stage and go away without showcasing their talents. There will be players on both teams who could earn lucrative moves if they can impress here too.

We’ve seen Saudi Arabia caught by stage fright in their opening match but I thought they looked more like themselves in the second game, in attacking areas at least, they just ran into probably the best defensive partnership in world football right now. There is no shame in that.

Egypt have clearly been affected by the uncertainty surrounding Mo Salah in the lead up to the tournament but even then they were almost given a lifeline by a lifeless Uruguay side in the first game. We did see glimpses of what they can offer against Russia but 20 minutes of madness at the back sent them tumbling from the tournament.

Betting

If Russia didn’t have the draw in their favour then this one might have opened up early but with no massive advantage in coming first or second I’m far from convinced these two sides will just play out 90 minutes and keep themselves fresh for their next challenges next weekend. That one is a no bet from me.

The other game could offer up some potential however. I would be disappointed if Egypt and Saudi Arabia leave this tournament without having a go. There is no need to try and be tight and contain the opposition. Both can get the ball down and into their attacking players. We’ve seen throughout the tournament that both of these teams are shaky defensively so the idea of there being goals in this one appeals to me.
