World Cup 2018 – Poland vs Colombia Betting Preview

The final match in the second set of fixtures in the group stage of the World Cup looks like being a tasty encounter when Poland meet Colombia in a really big clash in Group H of the competition.

This looked like being a good game when the draw was done but with both losing their opening match, meaning neither can afford to lose here, the stakes got a lot higher and hopefully the quality of football will follow suit.

Poland

As I said before their first match, for a while leading up to the tournament Poland were my idea of the dark horses for this competition but a few things began to go against them the closer we got to the action and I was put off and I was proved right in their first match. They produced a timid performance and for the most part looked one-dimensional and at times a touch clueless in the final third which is quite something when you consider who they have on board.

It was actually defensively I was more worried about the Poles before a ball was kicked and we certainly saw why with the calamitous second goal they conceded in their defeat to Senegal. They paid the price for that and now they have to show what they have internally as they look to get themselves out of the hole they have created.

Colombia

I don’t think we can take anything from the first match of the tournament for Colombia. When you are reduced to 10 men in the second minute you are always going to be up against it and in truth the match played out largely how it should have done from there. The South Americans do deserve credit for equalising despite a man disadvantage but ultimately, as expected, they ran out of steam.

Given that they lost to the side which looks the weakest in the group on paper, you would think Colombia must win their final two matches to make it through and that needs to begin here. If that is to happen they will need to sharpen up defensively where to be honest Davinson Sanchez looked an accident waiting to happen – not for the first time.

Team News

Poland have key defender Kamil Glik back in training but while the match might come too soon for him he may be risked given that they are out if they lose here. If they don’t risk him Thiago Cionek could keep his place. Dawid Kownacki could start after impressing off the bench against Senegal.

James Rodriguez was placed on the bench to start the game against Japan but desperate times call for desperate measures and he is expected to be employed from the beginning in this one. Carlos Sanchez will be suspended after his red card.

Betting

I’m expecting a bit of an open game here. The first goal in this match will be crucial and if it comes early it will open it right up with both sides knowing that losing is not an option. Both teams showed a defensive fragility to them in the first game but Colombia in particular looked good going forward. They probably looked the shakier at the back too. I’m expecting these two to combine for more than 2.5 goals.

I wasn’t going to get involved in the match betting because I wanted a fair deal of draw cover but the even money on Colombia with that safety valve is just too much to ignore. I thought they looked the better of the two sides going forward in their opening matches even with a man light. With Falcao ready to come to the party and James Rodriguez ready to be unleashed I think Colombia will have enough to edge a high scoring contest.
