The last matches of the season in the World Cup qualifying take place on Sunday evening when the three groups who haven’t yet played in this section do so in another busy night of international football. England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all in action on the evening to keep home interests strong.
Group C
Two early matches take place in this group when Azerbaijan host the runaway leaders Germany and the Czech Republic head to San Marino for a match they have to win. Northern Ireland are another side who need to win and they host a potentially dangerous Norway side.
Group E
There is an early game in this group too as Armenia host Kazakhstan in the battle of the two minnows. Later in the evening Poland head to Montenegro looking to preserve top spot in the group while two sides aiming to chase them down clash when Romania meet Denmark.
Group F
Early eyes will be on Wembley where England look to continue what should be a cruise to the finals when they host Lithuania and then later in the evening Malta host Slovakia and Scotland play out a must win match at home to Slovenia.
Betting
I’m going with three bets on Sunday. The first is an early win to nil double on England against Lithuania and Germany against Azerbaijan. Neither side have conceded a goal yet in the group and both face sides who are unlikely to do much attacking. Azerbaijan have only scored twice in the group which came in single goals against Norway and San Marino. I don’t see them scoring and Lithuania couldn’t breach Slovakia last time out and I expect England to be equally tough to break down.
Denmark and Romania could be drinking at the last chance saloon but all of a sudden Romania have hit a dry spell in front of goal. They have now gone three matches without scoring and a Denmark side with Kasper Schmeichel in goal and the experienced Simon Kjaer in front of him could be hard to break down. At the other end Denmark are finding their feet now and they look a good bet without the draw in Cluj.
Another side who are hard to break down are Slovenia. England couldn’t do it earlier in the group and in fact they were hanging on at times in that match so I’m not sure how well Scotland are going to fare. Slovenia have now conceded just one goal in their last six matches and with Scotland only able to draw against a weak Canada in midweek I’m not convinced Strachan’s men get it done here. I think Slovenia can take something from the game and if they find the net it could well be a win.
