The final of the World Grand Prix takes place in Hong Kong on Sunday on what is a big day for the combatants despite all they have won in their career when Stuart Bingham meets Neil Robertson for the opening title in the Players Series.
Both these men have lifted the biggest title in the game and whoever comes out on top in this final will pretty much ensure their automatic qualification for the World Championship to have another guaranteed crack at the big one.
Stuart Bingham
I don’t think Stuart Bingham would have been too high up the list of potential winners of this tournament going into the week, not necessarily because of his form because anyone in this competition had shown something over the course of the season, but because his run just to make it to this final looked about as tough as it could get. He has seen off Mark Williams, Wu Yize, Mark Selby and Judd Trump to make it into this title match so nobody can suggest he doesn’t deserve his spot in the final.
Bingham has held himself together well at times in this tournament and then when he has gone in front of those quality opponents he has been able to get the job done. He has made a century in every round of the event so far and if he can keep his scoring boots on in this final then he would have a chance. He isn’t quite playing with the house money but he has secured his spot in the Players Championship later in the month so he can attack this knowing he gets another shot at World Championship qualification.
Neil Robertson
I think it is fair to say that Neil Robertson has had the easier route through to this final. He overcame the challenges of Yuan Sijun and Dave Gilbert in the earlier rounds before dispatching of Xiao Guodong in the quarter final. You could argue that all three players were slightly off the top of their form or would struggle to be good enough to beat the Australian, but that certainly wasn’t the case when he took on Shaun Murphy in the semi-final, a match he came out on top in a deciding frame in.
Robertson made three centuries in that semi-final and after he went 5-3 down he won the last three frames without conceding a point so there is very much a case that he has improved the longer the week has gone on. That is generally the case when he goes on to win the tournament so we should expect to see the best of him here. The one question mark would be whether he can match Bingham in the safety department but over 19 frames he’ll fancy his chances of outscoring his opponent.

Head to head
These two men have met 13 times in their careers in the past and it is pretty tight between them. Stuart Bingham has won seven of those matches and Neil Robertson has won six. It is equally as tight in the frame department where Bingham holds the narrowest of leads 52-51. The first thing to point out is that this will be their first meeting in six years. It will be their first match in the World Grand Prix but they have played one previous final before. That was the 2019 Welsh Open final which Robertson won 9-7. This will be the first time they have faced off over 19 frames.
Betting
I don’t need to get involved in the match betting here because I am already on Neil Robertson to win the match at 14/1 having backed him outright before a ball was hit this week and with him having already secured the place part of the bet I am more than happy to let that ride, not just because he is an 8/15 favourite but also because I do think he will win this final. Bingham has had a fantastic run and certainly deserves to be in this final but Robertson looks like he is hitting his best form.
These two have made centuries for fun all week and I wouldn’t imagine centuries would be in too short a supply here but I’m not convinced that will equate to a break of over 127.5 which is the line for the highest break in the final. There will be pressure and tension in this final because of the importance of it for both men but they are both players who can play to the crowd once a century is made anyway. There wasn’t a single century in the only previous final they have played and while I would be surprised if that is the case here, there is no guarantee that a ton goes over 127 given the nerves and tension of a big final.
