2016 Scottish Open Snooker – Day 1 Betting Preview

The opening day of the Scottish Open on Monday is set to be another frantic day of snooker action as 32 matches takes place across eight tables and three sessions of play as the tournament gets underway in Glasgow.

There is no saving the big names until the second day of the tournament. Many of them are playing on Monday including the local hero John Higgins. Judd Trump, Mark Allen, Stuart Bingham and Mark Williams are among the star players on show on Monday.

Morning Session

There are two main tables which will be used for television and streaming coverage. Marco Fu is on one of them first up when he takes on Sanderson Lam while Oliver Lines gets the streamed treatment on the other table. He takes on Chen Zhe.

Away from the cameras Josh Boileau meets Yu Delu, Jamie Barrett plays Daniel Wells, Kurt Maflin and Sam Craigie battle in a clash of solid break builders, Rhys Clark and Eden Sharav meet in the first all-Scottish battle of the day, James Wattana plays Li Hang in an all-Asian tussle and Daniel Womersley plays Alex Borg.

Afternoon Session

This session contains three different sets of matches. The matches on the main table in the first set of games are the match of the day when John Higgins plays Alan McManus while Ricky Walden takes on Tian Pengfei on the other.

Elsewhere in this round of games we have Mitchell Mann against Sam Baird, Ken Doherty vs Matthew Stevens, Liam Highfield playing Tom Ford in what looks a good match, Michael Holt against David Grace, Jimmy Robertson going up against Igor Figueiredo and Luca Brecel facing Duane Jones.

The second set of games sees Stuart Bingham taking on Mark Joyce and Mark Williams playing Rod Lawler on the main tables with Fang Xiongman and Martin O’Donnell going at it away from the cameras along with Robbie Williams against Sean O’Sullivan.

The final round of afternoon matches will see Anthony McGill on one of the main tables when he faces John Astley. Barry Hawkins meets Hammad Miah on the other. Ben Woollaston takes on the wildcard Ross Vallance away from the cameras and Alfie Burden meets Zhang Anda.

Evening Session

There are two sets of matches in the evening with Judd Trump being first up on the TV table. He plays Zhang Yong while Mark Allen and Christopher Keogan meet on the other. On the outside tables Mike Dunn plays Jason Weston and Dechawat Poomjaeng meets Sydney Wilson.

The day finishes off on the main tables with Kyren Wilson playing Jamie Jones and Mark King playing Kurt Dunham. On the outside tables the last matches are Cao Yupeng against Michael White and Itaro Santos against Scott Donaldson.

Betting

As with the first two Home Series events picking and choosing bets is very much the order of the day this week. There will be 127 matches to bet on this week and they come thick and fast so there is no need to force anything and bearing that in mind I’m going to take just the one on the opening day.

We have to wait some time for it too as it is in the final set of matches but I like Jamie Jones against Kyren Wilson. Jones should be buzzing from his run to the quarter final of the UK Championship and any concerns that he would be down after the way he lost were put to bed when he made it through the qualifying for the German Masters last week.

That was something that Wilson didn’t do. He looked booked in for a return to Berlin when he led John Astley 4-0 in the second qualifier but he lost five frames on the bounce to lose 5-4 and that sort of thing might need more than a weekend to get over. That comeback from Astley shows Wilson isn’t bang on top of his game right now and Jones is a good price to take advantage of that.
