The second round of the Aegon Championships gets underway at the Queens Club in London on Wednesday and it does so with the tournament still reeling from losing some huge names in a quite amazing day on Tuesday.
We have four singles matches to get stuck into on Wednesday with the outside courts containing just doubles clashes from here on in.
Day 2 Recap
It was a brutal day for the favourites on Centre Court on Tuesday with the top three seeds all getting knocked out in the first three matches as Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray all bit the dust.
It was a much better day for us betting wise as both the odds against quotes we put up safely sailed in to leave us nicely in profit for the tournament heading into the second round of the event.
Viktor Troicki vs Donald Young
The opening match of the second round sees Viktor Troicki taking on Donald Young in a clash of styles not just as one is right handed and the other is left handed. They have met twice in their career with each winning one match.
I’m siding with Young in this one though. Troicki went 2hr47 with Janko Tipsarevic in a boiling hot day on Tuesday while Young only had to play one set before his opponent Nick Kyrgios quit on him on Monday. That is a huge advantage in the favour of the American and I think that combined with the extra variety in his game can see him through here.
Gilles Muller vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
The match of the day sees the Ricoh Open winner Gilles Muller taking on the recent winner in Lyon in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Both men had easy wins in the first round. This is their fifth meeting with the Frenchman currently holding a 3-1 lead.
I’m not sure who I think will win this match although I do think it will be tight. I think it will be so tight that I can see a tiebreak being needed in the first set. Muller bombs his serve down and Tsonga might take a while to react to it but Tsonga is no mug when it comes to serving so I can see a first set going all the way before this one settles down.
Grigor Dimitrov vs Julien Benneteau
Former champion Grigor Dimitrov is now the tournament favourite and after his performance in the first round it isn’t hard to see why. Julien Benneteau had a good win of his own in the first round too. These two meet for the fourth time but the first time in three years. It is 2-2 so far.
I fully expect the Bulgarian to win this match and I expect him to do it with the minimum of fuss too. He was brilliant against Ryan Harrison in the first round and a repeat of that has him a massive runner in this tournament not just this match. Benneteau came past a rusty James Ward in the opening round but it is up against it here. I fancy Dimitrov to win in straight sets.
Tomas Berdych vs Denis Shapovalov
Both Tomas Berdych and Denis Shapovalov had tight first round wins and their reward for that is a first meeting against each other here. Berdych came past Steve Darcis in straight sets while the Canadian saw off Kyle Edmund in three sets.
Berdych has grass court pedigree having made the final of Wimbledon in 2010 but he didn’t play great in the first round and while Shapovalov showed plenty of heart, spirit and fight in the first round I’m not convinced he can back that up. I don’t really fancy anything in this one so I’ll leave the finale alone.
