Egypt will find out who they will face in the Africa Cup of Nations final on Thursday evening when Ghana and Cameroon battle out for the right to face the former champions on Sunday.
Ghana and Cameroon have both won this tournament in the past and both will be desperate to get their hands back on the trophy so we should be in for a cracking second semi-final.
Cameroon
There is an argument to be made that Cameroon have been hit and miss in this tournament and while I get that I do think a little bit of substance needs to be provided against that debate. Cameroon didn’t look fantastic in their three group matches but having got the necessary win from their second match they knew they only needed to contain Gabon to qualify and both sides were wary of the other in their quarter final against Senegal.
Where I have been disappointed in Cameroon has been their output in front of goal. I can understand them not wanting to take too many risks against Gabon and Senegal but in fact they created some great chances against Senegal but didn’t convert them and were fortunate enough to come through a penalty shootout. I think they will need to be more clinical here.
Ghana
I guess you could offer up the same argument about Ghana in that they have looked okay at times and ordinary at others. I do however think we saw their best 45 minutes of the tournament so far in the second half of their quarter final against DR Congo when it really mattered and they should be able to draw a lot of confidence from that.
After a couple of matches of struggle up top things began to click for Ghana in attacking areas in that quarter final and if they can continue that improvement then they will really fancy their chances here. It must be said they have ridden their luck defensively at times in the tournament though and that would be a concern.
Betting
I think this could be a belting semi-final. There is a lot of good quality attacking talent on the pitch here and I’m hoping both go out and try and grab the opportunity that is before them because they should have noticed the defensive weakness in their opponents.
Cameroon should have conceded to Gabon and did concede to both Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau in the group stages while Ghana were all over the shop at times defensively in their quarter final. If both sides can be clinical with the chances that come along then I fancy both sides will find the net before the 90 minutes are up.
