We have reached the weekend which means we are ready for another event on the European Tour darts circuit with the latest tournament being the European Darts Open from Dusseldorf. We are closing in on the World Matchplay so the big names will be fine tuning their game leading into that.
32 of the best players in the world head to the German city looking to compete for the tournament and the decent first prize plus the confidence winning an event will bring ahead of the Matchplay.
Recent Winners

2014 – Peter Wright
2013 – Michael van Gerwen
2012 – Raymond van Barneveld
The Format
This is the eighth European Tour event of the year so I’m sure everyone is aware of the format but for those who aren’t the 16 seeds are joined by 16 qualifiers in a pre-drawn bracket. The last 32 of the tournament takes place on Saturday with the remainder of the tournament on Sunday. Each match is the best of 11 legs.
Top Half
Peter Wright is the big fish in the top half of the draw this week with Mensur Suljovic not far behind him. The other seeds in that half of the draw are Stephen Bunting, Dave Chisnall, Benito van de Pas, Alan Norris, Kim Huybrechts and Joe Cullen.
James Wade heads the qualifiers in this part of the draw with Krzysztof Ratajski, James Richardson, John Henderson, Steffen Siepmann, Aden Kirk, Christian Kist and Robbie Green the men who make up the half.
Bottom Half
Michael van Gerwen goes in search of a third European Tour event in succession from this part of the draw. The seeds looking to dethrone him are Simon Whitlock, Gerwyn Price, Michael Smith, Daryl Gurney, Jelle Klaasen, Ian White and Rob Cross who makes his debut as a seed.
The qualifiers include Vincent van der Voort, Mervyn King, Mark Walsh, Jerry Hendriks, Dimitri van den Bergh, Peter Jacques, Devon Petersen and Robert Allenstein. That makes this a very tricky looking half.

Betting
Taking one player has been a good route for me in recent times and that is the plan I am going with again this weekend. Kim Huybrechts has made the final and the semi-final of the last two renewals of this tournament and at 40/1 he looks good value to go all the way here.
Huybrechts has been in good form recently and has a good early draw. He is seeded to meet Alan Norris in the last 16 and Chuck is bang out of form. Joe Cullen or Mensur Suljovic would be beatable in the quarter final and then the tournament is anyone’s. At 40/1 I’m happy to make him my outright bet this weekend.
