2017 Royal Ascot Meeting – Day 4 Betting Preview

A tough day at Royal Ascot on Thursday and it doesn’t get any easier on Day 4 with betting opportunities few and far between.  We are, however, going with 2 bets.

2.30: Albany Stakes

21 2 year olds race over a trip of 6 furlongs and the Irish hold a very strong hand.  Jessica Harrington saddles the favourite Alpha Centauri who is a winner of both of her starts.  On both occasions, she won well with Actress, again in opposition, filling the runners up spot.  The concern is that the stable is bang out of form and the vibes aren’t quite what I’d hope for such a warm jolly.

Despite there being many unexposed types in the field, the one I want to side with is the current 2nd favourite Clemmie.  She has seen the track just once and finished only 3rd behind Gasta and Now You’re Talking.  The run can be upgraded though as she started slowly, raced away from the pace, was 14th at halfway but ran on well and was closing at the finish.  She is bred stoutly and is entered up in all the big 2 year old races later in the season.  After a slow start for the most powerful of trainer/jockey combos, they seem to be hitting the mark now and I expect this likeable filly to get them off to a flying start.

Tips

Back Clemmie (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 7.00 Bet365 BOG (¼ odds 1-4)

3.05: King Edward VII Stakes

A tough one to call with several horses coming here off the back of a run in the Derby.  The favourite, though, missed that despite being well backed after a good run in the Dante.  Crystal Ocean could be anything but there doesn’t seem to be an outstanding candidate so I’m sit this one out.

3.40: Commonwealth Cup

One of the races of the whole meeting for me and, despite their being 12 runners, there’s only 4 with any chance and I’d actually say it’s a straight shootout between the top 2 in the market.

Caravaggio won the Coventry Stakes here last year and is now 5 from 5 in his career.  His trainer, Aiden O’Brien says he’s the fastest horse he’s trained but I think today could be the day he loses his perfect record.

Harry Angel is the one for me.  Now with Godolphin, he is 2 from 4, finishing runner up on his other 2 runs.  He was 2nd to one of today’s rivals Blue Point on his seasonal debut but was giving 4lbs that day and pulled too hard early to do himself justice in the finish.   However, he left that run miles behind when absolutely bolting up in the Sandy Lane at Haydock, breaking the track record in the process.   I was at Haydock that day and he looked an absolute beast in the paddock, which he later translated to the track.   He was very impressive and proved he loves the fast ground he’ll get today.  At the prices, he looks the value.

Tips:

Back Harry Angel for a 1/10 stake at 4.33 Skybet BOG
