The next tournament on the snooker circuit is the Six Red World Championship which begins on Monday in Thailand. They have scaled the event down a little this year with just 32 invitees competing in the tournament.
There is no TV coverage of the event in the UK at least so we will just go with an outright preview for the tournament. Live scoring should be in place in the usual outlets.
Recent Winners
2016 – Ding Junhui
2015 – Thepchaiya Un-Nooh
2014 – Stephen Maguire
2013 – Mark Davis
2012 – Mark Davis
2010 – Mark Selby
2009 – Jimmy White
2008 – Ricky Walden
The Format
The 32 men have been drawn into eight groups of four for the first round of the tournament. The top two from each qualify for the last 16 with a winner from Groups A-D playing a runner up from E-H in a random draw. The opposite happens with the E-H winners.
The group stages are the best of nine frames which moves up to the best of 11 for the last 16 and quarter finals. The semi-finals are over the best of 13 frames with the final being a best of 15 frame affair. As the tournament name would suggest there are only six reds on the table at the start of the frame rather than 15.
Market Leaders
There is no point in trying to preview the draw this week as until we get to the knockout stage we don’t know what it is so I’ll cover some of the market leaders instead.
The defending champion Ding Junhui is the 11/2 favourite to win the title again. In terms of break builders there aren’t many who are going to rival him here but we would be taking his motivation on trust and even then he is pretty short in a quirky event such as this.
Marco Fu comes next at 10/1. Again he is a very good break builder although I’ve always thought this is a tournament for a player who gets the balls open and can move the white around which might not be him so I will hedge my bets and look elsewhere.
Stephen Maguire is a former winner here and apart from his 11/1 price which is a shade on the skinny side he ticks every box. He is aggressive enough to land this title and in decent enough form for those who like the price.
Stuart Bingham and Mark Williams are both 12/1 to win the title. Bingham is in no form whatsoever so I couldn’t be backing him in this tournament. Williams is a different story. He is in good form but he doesn’t win as often as he used to which is what puts me off backing him at 12/1. Kyren Wilson is also 12/1 but he is another who flatters to deceive too much for me to back him at that price.

Betting
I’m going with two outrights this week. Ryan Day has been in decent form and he is the kind of player who should go well in an event like this. He is capable of getting in from distance and he is an aggressive break builder. He is at the stage of his career where he should be winning more regularly and there is no reason why that can’t begin here.
Mark Davis is a twice winner of this tournament and he arrives here in decent enough form to have another tilt at the title. He seems to know the intricacies of how this format works and at 28/1 he is a decent enough price to go with. He always seems to play with added confidence in this tournament and that on its own makes him worthy of support.
