2017 World Matchplay Darts – Tournament Quarter Betting Preview

The World Matchplay begins on Saturday night but before it does so we have a final chance to get stuck into the four quarter markets which have been priced up for the Blackpool extravaganza.

With the field as strong as it is each of these quarters could be described as a tournament in themselves which means some competitive markets and tasty prices for us to tuck into.

First Quarter

This is arguably the biggest tournament of the lot in this quarter as Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor and Raymond Barneveld are all housed here. Someone like Taylor or Barneveld may have to beat each other and then Michael van Gerwen just to come through this quarter which clearly won’t be easy.

Usually you would make MVG a racing certainty to come through here and he probably still is but his wife is expecting their first child imminently so he could have other things on his mind which puts me off getting involved at 2/7. Given the route through the others have this is a quarter to leave alone.

Second Quarter

This one looks much more approachable from a betting point of view. Adrian Lewis is the leading seed in this quarter but he is getting back to full fitness after some sort of operation which makes Dave Chisnall the most likely escapee to come through.

He has been to the last four quarter finals and lost although a couple of them were to van Gerwen which we can let him off for but it makes me uneasy about taking him at a short price. Instead I would rather look for the value which could lie with Ian White.

He has made two tour finals in the last two months so he is clearly finding the red bit with consistency and hitting his doubles. In a quarter which could easily open right up he looks good value at 20/1.

Third Quarter

Gary Anderson leads the way in this section of the draw and while it wouldn’t be a surprise if he comes through this section he faces a couple of significant challenges before he makes the semi-final.

Mensur Suljovic could be one of those down the line with the Scot known to dislike playing slow players. Indeed Suljovic has beaten Anderson in this tournament in the past but a bigger danger could be Daryl Gurney who came of age in Vegas last week and who is likely to want another major slice of the limelight this week.

We saw in Vegas how well Gurney is scoring and if he can pin the doubles regularly then he could be a real runner in this quarter. At 9/1 he looks a huge price to come through this quarter.

Fourth Quarter

My outright bet Michael Smith is in this part of the draw and I’m not really keen on taking him on. He isn’t what I would call a standout price to win the quarter either so I will skip this section and stick to bets on the other two.
