2018-19 Premier League – Boxing Day Matches Betting Preview

One of the finest traditions in English football is the Boxing Day fixture list and thankfully that is something that has not been lost in the modern era. The Premier League are playing ball this year with nine matches on a busy day of action.

We have no fewer than four kick off times in play on Wednesday and three fixtures live on TV for those of us who are in the UK so there is no bigger excuse than to sit and watch near enough wall to wall football while consuming the turkey leftovers.

Early Kick Off

We get underway with two promoted sides from last season in what is a huge match for Fulham. They will come off the bottom of the table for a few hours at least if they can get the better of a Wolves side who were rebounding from a poor month nicely until Liverpool saw them off in the Friday Night Football last weekend. Wolves will move into the top seven with a win so there is a good incentive for both sides.

3pm Matches

We have no fewer than six matches in the traditional slot on Wednesday with the pick of them seeing the leaders Liverpool hosting their former manager Rafael Benitez and his Newcastle side at Anfield. Man City will be chomping at the bit to make up for their defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend. They go to Leicester for the second time in eight days after their penalty shootout win in the Carabao Cup. The other team in the title race are Tottenham Hotspur and they play host to Bournemouth at Wembley Stadium.

Everton will be looking to bounce back from their humbling by Tottenham on Sunday when they make the short trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley while Crystal Palace will be out to build on that fine win at the Etihad Stadium when they take on Cardiff City. The other match in the normal slot sees Manchester United hosting Huddersfield Town.

Late Game

We have two matches heading into the evening. The first of those looks like a tricky affair for Arsenal when they make the trip down to Sussex to take on Brighton and Hove Albion who will be licking their wounds after defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday. The Seagulls usually take it to the bigger sides on their own patch while Arsenal usually look to get on the front foot so this should be a decent match.

Evening Match

The final match of a busy Boxing Day is a London derby in which Chelsea really can’t afford any slip ups in. Their defeat to Leicester at the weekend has left them needing an insane run of form to get back into the title race and anything other than a win at Vicarage Road when they go up against Watford will end any hopes they have of winning the league. Watford have a win at West Ham to build on and would love to knock the Blues off their perch.

Betting

Two bets for me on Boxing Day. The first one comes in Crystal Palace who should be absolutely buzzing after their win against Manchester City. They don’t have a massively good home record but they will know their game with Cardiff City is a must win match. Cardiff are terrible on the road and have just been wiped out by Manchester United so they might not be feeling too good about themselves ahead of this one. Although Palace haven’t got the results they will have wanted at home this term their performances are improving and I expect them to win this with a bit in hand.

In the second to last match of the day I think we will see a few goals at the Amex Stadium when Brighton and Hove Albion take on Arsenal. Arsenal can’t seem to buy a clean sheet and Brighton are going to test their defence once again but going the other way Arsenal are looking excellent in attacking areas so you would think they are going to find the net regularly enough here. Arsenal could find the back of the net three times in this match quite easily but I expect Brighton to add to the scoring so I like over 2.5 goals here.
