Liverpool will look to return to the top of the Premier League table on Friday night when they play host to Huddersfield Town in a match which is huge for the home team. A win will take them back to the summit but anything but that could hand the title to Manchester City.
Huddersfield Town have been preparing for next term in the Championship for a while but they have nothing to lose here and on prime time you would hope that they have a bit of a go and don’t just look to avoid a tonking.
Liverpool
It is crunch time for the Reds now. I think they know that if they are going to be crowned Premier League champions this term then they will have to win their final three matches. It is asking a lot for Manchester City to slip up twice from here, so the pressure is very much on Jurgen Klopp’s men, especially while they are second in the table.
The Liverpool attack has found its mojo as a unit once again in recent times after Sadio Mane had to carry it for a little while and with them often being strong defensively there is no reason why the Reds can’t win their last three matches. They must not take their eye off the ball here though despite the first leg of the Champions League semi-final being next week.
Huddersfield Town
It has been well documented that this has been a season to forget for the Terriers. It was always going to be that. They barely looked good enough last season so the second season syndrome always looked likely to strike this term. The simple problem they have is that they just do not score enough goals. They haven’t at any stage in their Premier League tenure and that has been their undoing.
20 goals in 35 games is little short of pathetic and then the other problem comes in the fact that their defence hasn’t been able to cope with the pressure. They have now conceded 69, almost two a match, and when you can’t score and can’t stop conceding it doesn’t need a rocket scientist to work out what happens next. 16 of those goals against have been conceded in the last five matches.
Team News
Liverpool could be without midfield pair Adam Lallana and Fabinho who will be given fitness tests ahead of the match. Dejan Lovren has recovered from illness and could come into the side if Klopp decides to rest a defender.
Laurent Depoitre is definitely out for Huddersfield Town and Aaron Mooy is rated as a doubt although with concerns about his future at the club it would be a surprise if he is picked even if he is fit.

Betting
Usually in football matches the first thing we have to ascertain is who will win the match and while any outcome is possible in sport I think we can park that question and instead ask ourselves how many Liverpool will win by. They currently trail Manchester City by eight goals and while it would take both teams slipping up for that to come into play, I’m sure Liverpool would hate to win this by one goal and then down the line see the title decided against them on goal difference.
With that in mind I think they’ll go out with the intention of winning big here and given that Huddersfield have conceded four in three of their last five matches, it would appear there that is a good chance they will do just that. Liverpool are conceding three goals on the Asian handicap and if we figure there is a good chance Huddersfield don’t find the net here I believe there is a good chance of the Reds covering in full. West Ham, Leicester and a weakened Tottenham side all scored four against this lot. I’ll back Liverpool to do likewise and cover accordingly.
