The compelling chase at the top and the bottom of the Premier League takes another step this week as the 20 sides compete in a midweek round of action, one which once again could carry plenty of significance to the overall picture.
The round begins with four matches on Tuesday evening, where the bottom of the table will be the centre of attention, with four sides involved in the battle to avoid the drop competing with points increasingly valuable.
Tuesday’s fixtures are as follows: (7.45pm unless stated)
Cardiff vs Everton
Huddersfield vs Wolves
Leicester vs Brighton
Newcastle vs Burnley (8pm)
Preview
The televised action on Tuesday night comes from St James’ Park where Newcastle United will be going in search of successive wins after beating Huddersfield Town on Saturday. They play host to Burnley who themselves are looking to build on a good win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon. Whoever wins this one will be at least seven points clear of the drop so this is a pretty big match.
Cardiff and Brighton will be the other teams looking to pull away from the danger zone. The Bluebirds will look to put their humbling by Watford behind them when they host Everton, while the Seagulls head to the King Power Stadium where Leicester City begin life without Claude Puel. The other match on the evening sees already doomed Huddersfield Town hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Betting
I’m going to attack this card a little bit as there looks to be some cracking bets on it. I’ll begin with the TV game where I might not be surprised that an over 2 goal line can be backed at 1.80 but I’m certainly happy it is. We are going to see the attacking play of Newcastle United go to a different level with Miguel Almiron in their side now while Burnley possess arguably the in form strike pair in the Premier League right now. Burnley are seen as this tight team, an under machine but that perception is wrong. Five of their last seven have gone over 2 goals and another had exactly that number. Newcastle only scored twice against Huddersfield on Saturday but they hit the woodwork 5-6 times. There is no longer that pressure to fight for a point here and both will fancy their chances of winning. I’ll take the over. It landed in the reverse fixture and only lost once in their five PL meetings thus far.
In the Cardiff City and Everton match I fancy both teams to score can land us a punt. Cardiff’s defence is starting to get exposed big time and Everton have the trickery in their attacking core to open it up, potentially at will. At the same time Cardiff rely a lot of set-pieces and long throws and things and Everton stink the place out defending anything like that. Cardiff probably have to have a go here because they are seeing other teams just above them find form and Everton need a win to ease the pressure on Marco Silva. I’ll take both to score and given how terrible Everton are at defending set plays I’ll have a nibble on Sol Bamba to score anytime. He is actually Cardiff’s leading scorer with four goals. At 17/2 there is too much juice in that price to ignore.
My final bet comes at the King Power Stadium where I’m expecting to see the real Leicester City. Brighton need to be careful. They are beginning to slide a little close to the drop zone for comfort and I fancy Leicester will push them further down the pile. Brighton have lost four of their last six and while they have had some tough matches in that time you can’t lose to Fulham and Burnley in the manner they did without alarm bells ringing. Leicester might have lost five of their last six but they are freed of Puel now and I think we’ll see the class they have in attack doing the business for them.
