The Christmas period in Sky Bet League 1 continues on Boxing Day when all 24 sides are back in action just four days after their previous match. With another fixture list to come on Saturday and one more the following Tuesday the action comes thick and fast at the minute.
Three sides look to have sprung clear a little at the top but there is a big chasing pack forming looking to bring them in while at the other end of the table there is a real dogfight building up nicely.
Boxing Day Fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated)
Gillingham v Portsmouth (13.00)
Accrington Stanley v Shrewsbury Town
AFC Wimbledon v Plymouth Argyle
Barnsley v Peterborough United
Burton Albion v Wycombe Wanderers
Coventry City v Charlton Athletic
Fleetwood Town v Doncaster Rovers
Oxford United v Southend United
Rochdale v Blackpool
Scunthorpe United v Luton Town
Sunderland v Bradford City
Walsall v Bristol Rovers
Big Matches
The leaders Portsmouth will be looking to keep hold of their four point advantage at the summit when they head to Gillingham in the early kick off. That means by the time the rest of the division kick off they could be seven points clear of Luton in second place. The Hatters make the trip to Glanford Park to take on Scunthorpe looking for a magnificent seventh win in a row. Sunderland in third play host to Bradford City in front of a crowd which is expected to be over 40,000 strong which is amazing for the third tier. Two sides in the top six meet at Oakwell where fifth placed Peterborough United head to sixth placed Barnsley.
Best of the Rest
Fourth placed Charlton head to the Ricoh Arena to go up against a Coventry side who are fading fast while at the other end of the table there is a Christmas six pointer as AFC Wimbledon play host to Plymouth Argyle. Doncaster Rovers cross the Pennines to take on Fleetwood Town while Carabao Cup semi-finalists Burton Albion welcome Wycombe Wanderers to the Pirelli Stadium.

Betting
I’ll go with two bets on Boxing Day with Charlton Athletic at Coventry the first of them. Coventry City look to be in a bit of a slump at the minute and Charlton are the latest side who can take advantage of that. Coventry are winless in seven and have only scored four goals in that run, one of which was a penalty which was a consolation against Luton. Charlton have won seven of their last eight and while they lost at Blackpool in that run there is nothing wrong with that. They look to be getting stronger as their win at Portsmouth recently highlighted so I like the Addicks here.
The obvious bet in the division is for Luton to beat Scunthorpe. I don’t usually like taking teams to extend lengthy winning runs because inevitably they will end at some point but Luton will never have a better chance to make it seven wins in a spin than at Glanford Park. Scunthorpe have lost their last five matches and have only one goal in that time. In all they have lost eight of their last 10 whereas Luton have only dropped two points in their last 10 matches and are scoring for fun. Boxing Day last year Luton went to Swindon and won 5-0 so they don’t get caught up in eating turkey and any of that nonsense. Football is an unpredictable game but everything suggests Luton will win comfortably here.
