2018-19 Sky Bet League 1 – Saturday 16th February Matches Betting Preview

There might still be a couple of Sky Bet League 1 sides in the FA Cup this weekend but that doesn’t stop the rest of the division competing in league action and after Sunderland took on Accrington to start the latest round of matches on Friday night, there are nine more fixtures for Saturday.

As with Friday night, we have some TV treatment in the division on Saturday with one match live and then the other eight games take place after that with it being a big afternoon for a number of the teams in action.

Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated)

Southend United v Portsmouth (12.30)

Barnsley v Wycombe Wanderers

Bradford City v Plymouth Argyle

Charlton Athletic v Blackpool

Coventry City v Walsall

Fleetwood Town v Luton Town

Gillingham v Scunthorpe United

Oxford United v Peterborough United

Shrewsbury Town v Burton Albion

Big Matches

The TV match comes from Roots Hall where Portsmouth will look to move back into third when they head to Essex to take on Southend United. They only need to avoid defeat to do that. Leaders Luton are on the road as well. They can move nine points clear of second placed Barnsley should they win at Fleetwood Town and the Yorkshire outfit lose to Wycombe Wanderers at Oakwell. Barnsley can take a massive step towards automatic promotion with a win in that match.

Best of the Rest

Two sides in or around the play-off mix meet at The Valley as Charlton Athletic takes on Blackpool while Peterborough United will look to get their season back on track when they go up against Oxford United at the Kassam. There is a Midlands derby when Coventry City host Walsall while at the bottom end of the table Plymouth Argyle make the extremely long trip to Bradford City. Shrewsbury Town and Gillingham will look to move out of the bottom four when they host Burton Albion and Scunthorpe United respectively.

Betting

I like three bets throughout the course of the day on Saturday. The first of them comes in the live game where I fancy Portsmouth will get back to winning ways against a Southend United side who have so many injuries it is untrue. Southend have a terrible record against the top six in the league and that was further shown in midweek when Doncaster United put them to the sword. Portsmouth had their feet up watching the action unfold in that match and with Omar Bogle adding plenty of pep to their attack, this match being on the road and in front of the TV cameras I expect Portsmouth to get back to winning ways here.

Barnsley are the best footballing side in the division apart from the one I watch every week and I’m expecting the beautiful game to see off the ugly one when the Yorkshire side host Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday. I has the misfortune of seeing Wycombe with my own eyes last week and they are an extremely limited side. As long as Barnsley keep the back door shut I expect them to win this one with a little bit to spare.

Scunthorpe United have been good to me in recent times and that can continue when they take on a struggling Gillingham on Saturday. Stuart McCall’s men are making a good head of steam in their ascent up the division while the Gills are going completely the other way. Gillingham have one win in their last seven while Scunthorpe have only lost one of their last eight, and that was away at Barnsley where there is absolutely no shame in losing at all. Scunthorpe have the form behind them and I think they can bank another win here.
