The third matchday of the UEFA Nations League gets underway on Thursday evening when a series of matches takes place across the continent and for those who didn’t start the tournament how they would have liked it is a big night.
They will need to find a victory to keep their hopes alive while those who hit the ground running can take a huge step towards winning their groups on what should be an extremely competitive night of football.
Group A
There is only one match in the elite group on Thursday which comes from A3 where the defending European champions Portugal make the trip to Poland without Cristiano Ronaldo. Both sides will be looking to make up for disappointing World Cup showings and have the chance to put that right behind them on Thursday.
Group B
There is only one match in this group on Thursday night as well and it is from B2 where two more sides who were competing in the World Cup meet. The hosts of that tournament Russia look to continue their good recent form when they face a Sweden side who will still be reeling from surrendering a 2-0 lead to Turkey in their opening match of this competition.
Group C
The majority of the action comes from the third tier of groups with Scotland competing in C1 when they look to build on their win over Albania last time out. They make the trip to Israel knowing a win will put them in command of the section. Over in C4 there are two matches which sees Lithuania playing host to Romania and then the other game will be feisty as Montenegro go up against neighbours Serbia.
Group D
It is all about D3 as far as the basement group is concerned where Kosovo will look to continue their early campaign form when they take on a Malta side that continue to disappoint. The other match in the section sees the improving Faroe Islands looking for the scalp of Azerbaijan in a must-win match for both teams if they harbour hopes of promotion.

Betting
This looks the toughest card of this competition so far in terms of betting it has to be said. There isn’t a huge amount that stands out to me in truth although I guess that is the point of the competition with matches supposedly between sides of equal ability.
One match where that might not be the case is the one where Israel take on Scotland. Scotland are clearly bang up for this as we saw in their emphatic win over Albania in the previous set of fixtures. Almost every interview Alex McLeish gives he references the amount of time it has been since Scotland qualified for a major tournament so we know his side will be giving their all. They head to Israel who have lost seven of their last eight home matches and who looked bang ordinary in losing to Albania in their first match. I expect Scotland to get stronger throughout this campaign as their Premier League players begin to see more action. With the draw cover I think we can take the chance on them winning in Israel to take huge control of the section.
