It is the final day of the European Championships in Dortmund on Sunday with the quarter finals, semi-finals and the final all being played on another bumper day of darts. There is a decent first prize up for grabs and for those left in not yet in the Grand Slam a spot in that tournament is available too.
With Michael van Gerwen out of the way the remaining eight players will all fancy their chances of landing the crown on what will be a busy day of darts. We’ll cover the quarter finals here but time restrictions will deny us the chance of previewing the evening session.
Steve West vs Simon Whitlock
The opening quarter final of the day sees the man who beat Michael van Gerwen on Friday night, Steve West, taking on the only former winner left in the field in the form of Simon Whitlock in what is suddenly a huge match for both men.
The big question will be whether West can back up his heroics of the other night. In fairness he’ll need to match his performance if not better it and that is never easy to do after such an epic win. We’re getting towards the stage of a tournament where my trust in Whitlock disappears though and while his win over Wright looks good on paper he was truly awful and offered no competition to the Australian. It feels like the best way to play this opening game is to sit it out.
Joe Cullen vs Rob Cross
The second of the four quarter finals sees the world champion Rob Cross looking to make it into another major semi-final when he goes up against Joe Cullen who is playing in his second televised quarter final in the space of three months.
Cullen has played some really nice stuff in this tournament so far and if he can maintain his form he will fancy his chances of coming through this match. Cross knows how to go all the way in big events but he has flattered to deceive for a while and we’ve not really seen the best of him in this tournament. His throw looks erratic to me and a sign of that is that he has hit just four 180s so far in the event. Cullen matched that total in his first round win and bettered it in the last 16. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cullen wins this match but I’m always wary of backing players who have never reached a stage of an event before. Instead I’ll take Cullen to hit the most 180s.

Darren Webster vs Max Hopp
The penultimate quarter final sees the heavily underrated Darren Webster taking on the German superstar Max Hopp in a match which could have huge implications on the career of the winner.
Webster has a genuine chance of chasing down a first major title while Hopp could launch a special time for the game if he is able to come out on top on Sunday so there is much at stake for both men. Webster has shown the better form this week and if this was in England I’d take him all day long but we saw the impact the crowd had on Saturday evening so it is hard to go against Hopp now. I’ll dodge this one too.
Gerwyn Price vs James Wade
The last of the quarter finals if probably the pick of them on paper at least as two men who have been to major finals meet when Gerwyn Price takes on the multi-time major winner James Wade, who could somewhat relaunch his career on Sunday.
With what has been happening to van Gerwen this week these two have actually gone under the radar but you would make the winner of the match the favourite to win the tournament on the form they have shown over the weekend and with that in mind I fancy we might get a close contest here. Generally when these two collide they are tight matches and on a day where tension and nerves are going to be on show for all to see I expect this to be another. I think over 16.5 legs is the way to play this one.
