Afternoon Session

Mark Williams vs Ali Carter

The opening match of the tournament sees the three time tournament winner this season in Mark Williams taking on a very dangerous opponent in Ali Carter over the best of seven frames for a place in the quarter final of the event.

Williams is very much one of the form horses in the snooker world right now and you would think he has to have eyes on the two lucrative titles left to play for this season. Carter often comes good at this time of year too though so this should be a cracking match. I think Williams will win this but the odds look about right.

Mark King vs Stephen Maguire

The afternoon session concludes with Stephen Maguire taking on the last man into the tournament in the form of Mark King with the winner of this one playing the winner of the earlier match in the quarter final.

I think Maguire is a worthy favourite here but although King’s results recently have been ordinary looking his performances have been much stronger and I wouldn’t be completely surprised if the freedom he can play with allows him to come through here. I have to say I don’t have a strong opinion either way in this one.

Evening Session

Stuart Bingham vs Neil Robertson

The evening session opens up with a battle of former world champions as Stuart Bingham takes on Neil Robertson over the best of seven frames for a place in the quarter finals later in the week.

Both these men will probably want a decent week here to set them up for one final flourish to the season. Bingham was forced to miss some of the campaign while the well-publicised off-table issues that Robertson had to deal with earlier in the season means this hasn’t been a great year for him.

I’m already on Bingham outright and while he is the value here in a match I see as a pick ‘em I’m happy to let my outright dough take the strain in this match and avoid having another bet on Ballrun.

Mark Selby vs Liang Wenbo

The final match of the opening day of action sees the world champion Mark Selby up against the dangerous Chinese player Liang Wenbo for the right to face either Bingham or Robertson in the quarter final.

You have to say that Selby’s form has been very ordinary for a man of his talents in recent times but he’s far too good to play badly for too long and with the defence of his world title closing in I’m expecting his best game to come out soon and hopefully here.

Wenbo is a great player but for whatever reason when you stick him in these one table formats against top level players at the minute he has been known to freeze and be well beaten. Selby will want to win this and win it well and I fancy he can come through with a bit extra to spare.

Tips

Back M.Selby (-1.5 frames) to beat L.Wenbo for a 4/10 stake at 1.85 with Boylesports
