2018 Royal London One Day Cup Semi-Final – Hampshire vs Yorkshire Betting Preview

Kent are through to the Royal London One Day Cup final and on Monday we will find out who they will place in the Lord’s showpiece a week on Saturday when Hampshire host Yorkshire in the second semi-final at the Ageas Bowl.

Hampshire have been one of the better one day sides of the last decade and are expected to prevail in this match but Yorkshire have been defying the odds all season and will be hoping they can do that one more time here.

Hampshire

The South Group table toppers bypassed the quarter finals last week and they will hope that serves them well but their confidence could be a little low having taken a smashing up from Surrey in the Championship since they last played in the 50 over competition. All the pressure is on them in this match which might not be ideal.

Throughout the first phase of the competition we saw their middle and lower order have to rescue Hampshire a number of times and they could easily run into issues with the bat here, especially if they are chasing to reach a Lord’s final. With that in mind it is absolutely imperative that they bowl well to ease the heat on their batting.

Yorkshire

At one stage it looked like Yorkshire were not going to qualify for the knockout stages but they won two effective do or die games in their final two group matches to progress and then they came out on top in the quarter final at Essex last week. They certainly carry all the positive energy into this match even though Hampshire won their group.

The really amazing thing about this Yorkshire run is that they are doing it without their England players and they will need to call on their squad depth once again here but if they can put a score up with the bat you get the feeling they will fancy their chances of defending it. That said it has been a while since they have been in a Lord’s final so they might feel some tension.

Team News

Hampshire have announced that Sam Northeast is back from injury in this match while Liam Dawson is also fit. That is particularly important because Mason Crane and Brad Taylor will miss out with injury. Dale Steyn continues as overseas player.

Yorkshire have their overseas player back for this match with Cheteshwar Pujara back from India’s thrashing of Afghanistan to play here. They remain without Adil Rashid, David Willey, Liam Plunkett, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow though as they are away with England.

Betting

I had a good first semi-final betting wise but there isn’t a whole lot that I’m interested in for this second match I have to admit. The case for Yorkshire being value is certainly an easy one to make but in truth I think the prices are about right given that Hampshire are a very good side on their day.

Instead I will take under 8.5 sixes. This is a big outfield at the Ageas Bowl and just like last week, Tom Kohler-Cadmore aside there isn’t really a big hitter on show in the match unless Rilee Rossouw tees off but he’s not in great nick either. Yorkshire’s attack is going pretty well and are hard to hit while Hampshire have a couple of bowlers who don’t go for many. On this outfield with the pressure of this occasion 8.5 looks too high a line to me.

I’ll also have a go at Liam Dawson being Hampshire’s top batsman in the match. He is a very important player for Hampshire in the middle order because if it does go wrong at the top then he needs to come in and rebuild and if there is a platform laid then he can come in and swing and score quickly. Dawson made a solid 76 in the final group game and something like that could be enough here.
