2019-20 Big Bash League – Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Sixers Tips and Betting Preview

The Big Bash League is back on Boxing Day and it returns with a repeat of a clash from earlier in the season as the Perth Scorchers take on the Sydney Sixers in what is already a pretty big game for both sides it has to be said.

Both teams head into this contest with a win and a pair of draws to show for their efforts this season so they are both needing to pick up a run of consistent results if they are not only to make the playoffs but get there in a decent position.

Perth Scorchers

After losing to the Sydney Sixers in the first meeting between these two sides this term, the Perth Scorchers have been involved in a couple of high scoring contests, one in which they have come out on the right side of and the other they went down in. You would expect the trend of high scoring to continue here on this tiny ground and with the wicket looking fantastic here last time out. That might just suit the Scorchers.

Moving forward in the competition there is no doubt that the Scorchers will want their bowlers to turn up to the party, but for now they should be able to win matches with their batsmen, although they won’t need to be slipping up from a very healthy position like they did in Adelaide too often. There are improvements in this Perth outfit but I never see that as a bad thing at this stage of a campaign I have to say.

Sydney Sixers

The season started very well for the Sydney Sixers as they beat the Perth Scorchers and when they had restricted the Hobart Hurricanes to fewer than 130 runs it looked like the former champions would be opening up the campaign with successive wins but then things went pear-shaped very quickly with a calamitous collapse and then since then they have been smoked to smithereens by the Brisbane Heat.

The Sixers have had a few days off to reflect on those previous outings, to see what they were doing right and where they have been going wrong. It won’t take a whole lot to work it out. They have a light batting line up at the best of times and their middle order has offered little when it has mattered. That has to change if they are going to get anywhere this season. They don’t need many more bowling efforts like the one they endured against the Heat either.

Team News

The Scorchers have made two changes to their squad for this match with Matt Kelly having recovered from illness to be included once again while big hitter Tim David has also been included in the ranks. Sam Whiteman is once again omitted.

Surprisingly given the size of the beating they took at the hands of the Brisbane Heat, the Sydney Sixers have named an unchanged squad for this match, which suggests they either don’t have a lot in reserve or they want those they picked to put things right.

Betting

Both these two teams have too many doubts over them to warrant supporting in the match betting, especially when you factor in that defending this ground is going to be pretty difficult this season unless you put up a real monster of a score. Given that Sydney Sixers are struggling a little more with the bat I’d probably want to be on the side of the Perth Scorchers here but not by enough to merit backing them.

The bet I like instead is for over 11.5 sixes to be struck in the match. We saw how small this ground is for hitting sixes when the Melbourne Renegades were here in the first game of the competition at Optus Stadium and I don’t envisage anything to have changed in that regard going into this match. The Perth batsmen backed up their efforts against the Renegades in the loss to Adelaide while Sydney have some decent hitters in their ranks. I expect a dozen sixes to fly in here.
