A lengthy and memorable Bundesliga season ends on Saturday and it does so with much still to be determined on a day which is all set up for twists and turns and no shortage of drama as the German top flight finally concludes.
We already know that Bayern Munich are the champions and that Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig will join them in the Champions League next term. We also know Paderborn will be relegated but on Saturday we’ll find out the fourth team to join Europe’s elite next season and who will be the second team to fall through the trap door.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (2.30pm UK time)
Union Berlin v Fortuna Dusseldorf
Bayer Leverkusen v Mainz
Borussia Dortmund v Hoffenheim
Borussia Monchengladbach v Hertha Berlin
Eintracht Frankfurt v Paderborn
Augsburg v RB Leipzig
Freiburg v Schalke
Werder Bremen v FC Koln
Wolfsburg v Bayern Munich

Big Matches
In terms of the matches that count there are four of them for the Champions League race and the battle to avoid the drop. Bayer Leverkusen will claim that fourth spot at the top table of Europe next season if they can beat Mainz. Should they lose then Borussia Monchengladbach will get in if they can see off Hertha Berlin. At the other end of the table all eyes will be on Dusseldorf when they travel to Union Berlin. A win or a draw for Dusseldorf will ensure they get a second chance of survival in the play-off. Should they lose then Werder Bremen will extend their stay in the Bundesliga for another week if they can beat FC Koln.
Best of the Rest
Elsewhere the pick of the matches is the one at the bottom of the list where the champions Bayern Munich travel to take on a Wolfsburg side who have done well since they returned from the break. Borussia Dortmund end their campaign at home to Hoffenheim while RB Leipzig see their domestic campaign end away to Augsburg. Freiburg host Schalke while Eintracht Frankfurt take on already relegated Paderborn in the other game.
Betting
This isn’t the easiest set of fixtures to bet on because as is so often the case in the final week or two of a season, teams who have to win are priced much shorter than they would normally be. That is certainly the case here. I do think I’ll go with one though and that is for Dusseldorf to ensure they will play-off for survival when they head to Union Berlin. A draw is likely to be enough for the visitors but I’ll back them to win the game.
I’ll do that because I haven’t really been impressed with Union Berlin since they have come back from lockdown. They have only won two of their matches and one of them was a narrow win over the bottom side Paderborn. Only the top two sides have beaten Dusseldorf since the Bundesliga returned and clearly Union are not at that level. While a draw will do Dusseldorf they could do with a win to build confidence for the play-off. At even money the visitors will do me here.
