2019-20 Premier League – Man Utd vs Southampton Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The fourth to last set of fixtures in the Premier League conclude on Monday night when two of the form teams since the competition returned clash at Old Trafford as Manchester United host Southampton in what looks like an appealing match for the neutral.

There is a fair amount riding on the match as well as a win for Manchester United will see them move into third place in the table and they would then be in control of their own destiny with regards to qualifying for the Champions League next term. Southampton are playing out time now but if they can get to 50pts that would reflect a huge improvement.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live on TV in the UK on Sky Main Event, Sky Premier League, Sky One and Pick. The build up to the game begins at 7.30pm with the match kicking off at 8pm.

Manchester United

Manchester United go into this match in fine form but the verdict on the Manchester City case has ramped up the pressure on them in this game. They go into the match in fifth spot in the Premier League, and we now know that will not be good enough for Champions League football next season. They will go third with a win here though so they are not going to be short of an incentive or motivation to win this match.

One of the reasons why United are in such great form is their front three have become incredibly potent in recent times. The emergence of Mason Greenwood as well as the signing of Bruno Fernandes has transformed their season, while lockdown allowed them to get Paul Pogba back on the pitch and he is enjoying the extra freedom he can play with. There are still doubts over United defensively but by and large they are starting to look ominous once again.

Southampton

The Saints will be more than quietly confident heading to Old Trafford. Their record on the road this season stands up to most in the division and although they only drew at Everton last time out, they dominated the early stages of that match and really should have been a lot further ahead than they were. Southampton can play with freedom here as there is nothing on the match at all in terms of avoiding anything or qualifying for anything.

Southampton look really sharp going forward when they are away from home but it was only eight days ago they were beating Man City at St Mary’s. They have really upped their game since the restart and with dangerous players such as Danny Ings and Nathan Redmond in their side it is not hard to see why they will fancy their chances here. Much like their opponents here though, there is a question mark over them defensively.

Team News

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reported no new injury concerns so it will be interesting if the extra day for recovery ahead of this match will see him start the same XI for a fifth game in a row. Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are both injured.

Southampton will be without Moussa Djenepo, Yan Valery and Sofiane Boufal but they are more hopeful that they will be able to call upon Jannik Vestergaard to shore up their defence a little. Ralph Hasenhuttl has rotated Danny Ings’ strike partner recently so it might be Shane Long’s turn to start.

Betting

I like both teams to score here. United are absolutely flying going forward but Bournemouth scored twice in the last match at Old Trafford and they had barely registered a shot on target since the restart heading into that game. Norwich scored against United in the FA Cup as well so there are absolutely no guarantees that the home side will keep a clean sheet here, especially against a side who are so spritely on their travels as Southampton.

The only away game Southampton have not scored in since the opening day at Burnley was at Anfield against Liverpool. They have scored at the Etihad, the Emirates, Tottenham, Chelsea, Leicester and Wolves and if they add Old Trafford to the list then it is hard to see the 10/11 on both teams to score not landing. United look like scoring every time they go forward at the minute but Saints carry a threat themselves. I’ll take both teams to find the scoresheet.
