The Premier League comes out of the international break with seven matches on a good looking card on Saturday, one which features the top three four from last season which is a pretty rare event these days.
As always we have three different kick off times to make up this day of action and given that five of last year’s top six are on show the quality is guaranteed right throughout the day in the top division in England.
Early Kick Off
It all begins with one of the biggest historical matches in the competition as Liverpool host Newcastle United in the lunchtime kick off at Anfield. Immediately when this fixture comes along the mind is drawn back to the 90s and those two famous battles involving Kevin Keegan’s title chasing Newcastle side which both ended 4-3 to Liverpool in epic contests. Given the status of the two sides currently it would take a brave man to predict a repeat of that sort of battle here.
3pm Matches
Five matches take place at the usual kick off time and there are a couple of tasty looking encounters among them. One which might not fall into that category sees Brighton and Hove Albion hosting Burnley at the Amex Stadium. Manchester United play host to Leicester City in what should be a great game, one which really should be on TV because I suspect their styles are going to blend very nicely indeed.
Sheffield United are back at home on Saturday afternoon and they’ll be fancying their chances of a second win of the season at Bramall Lane when Southampton visit the Yorkshire venue. The other two matches sees Tottenham Hotspur hosting Crystal Palace in a banana skin of a London derby with Palace having already won at Old Trafford this season while Wolverhampton Wanderers take on Chelsea at Molineux in what should be another great game.
Late Game
We have to wait until the final match of the day to be able to see the champions in action. Manchester City head to Carrow Road to take on Norwich City in a match they will be soundly expected to win, but we saw on the opening day of the season against Liverpool, and against Chelsea subsequently, that Norwich aren’t going to lay down and roll over for any team. They will have a go here and that should make for a great watch, unless you are a fan of the Canaries that is, as this one could get nasty for the Norfolk side.
Betting
I’ll take a couple of bets over the course of the day with the first one coming at Old Trafford where I think Leicester City can get a result of some kind against Manchester United. I understand the viewpoint that United will be more comfortable against Leicester than they were against Crystal Palace in their last home match as Leicester will take the game to them allowing them to counter better but I still think the Foxes are good enough to get the result. Not enough credit is being given to how well Leicester have defended this season although that is probably only because of how good they have looked going forward with the likes of James Maddison and Youri Tielemans standing out in particular. It is that attack I like the look of here and while I wouldn’t be surprised if Leicester win the game, I’m happy to have the draw on my side too so I’ll take Brendan Rodgers’ men on the +0.5 Asian line.
I don’t think I’ve ever taken a goal line that has been at 4 before but I have to start in the match between Norwich City and Manchester City, a game you’ve got to think could be a bit nasty for the home team. This would have been a tough assignment for the Canaries even if they had their strongest defence out but with Max Aarons and Christoph Zimmerman expected to miss out and the likes of Ben Godfrey, Grant Hanley and Timm Klose also likely to miss out Norwich are without a number of defensive players. Manchester City have an attack to run riot but they are missing their best defender themselves. You know Norwich will look to have a go here which probably isn’t going to serve them well but it should give us an entertaining game and one which contains more than four goals.
