The Premier League weekend continues with two more matches on Sunday afternoon with events at the bottom of the table in the spotlight more than at the other end of proceedings, despite a couple of London giants on show.
Both matches are live on Sky and look to be competitive affairs as sides who are at the wrong end of the table battle it out to pull away from the danger zone against teams who might just be looking up after the news about Manchester City over the weekend.
Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur (14.00)
The first match of the two comes from Villa Park as Aston Villa host Tottenham Hotspur in a game both will be looking at as one they can win. Villa need to win to pull away from the relegation mix while Tottenham will move into what is currently an important fifth place with a win here.
Villa know this is a free hit to ease their relegation fears a couple of weeks before they go to Wembley for a cup final and I think they’ll be bang up for this. Tottenham are pretty ordinary on their travels these days but must see this as a match they could win. Spurs have only won two away games in 12 in the Premier League this season so I can’t be backing them and I’m in no rush to back the hosts either.
The bet I like here is over 2.5 goals. Spurs aren’t keeping many clean sheets these days and only they will know how they managed to keep one against Man City last time out. Villa don’t enjoy many shutouts either so goals should be a feature of this game, especially with both believing this is one they can win. There are enough creative players on show to open these defences up and I think over 2.5 goals will land.
Arsenal vs Newcastle United (16.30)
The second game of the day comes from the Emirates Stadium where Arsenal will go up against Newcastle United in a battle of two sides who should be far enough from the drop zone to have an easy run-in to the end of the campaign, but who aren’t really going anywhere in the grand scheme of things.
You would have to think the draw is a bit of a runner here. Arsenal have drawn their last four while Newcastle have drawn three of their last four. I’m not really a draw backer though. I certainly couldn’t be backing Arsenal at this price given how infrequently they win at present, but I’m not massively keen on backing a Newcastle side who rely too much on their defenders to score to find the net. This one is a pretty easy one to sit out.
