2019-20 Sky Bet Championship – Charlton vs Millwall Tips, TV and Betting Preview

It is going to be a busy and dramatic end to the Championship season and it continues again on Friday night when two London sides who are in need of three points for different reasons meet at The Valley when Charlton Athletic host Millwall.

Charlton have come out of lockdown well and are easing their relegation fears but are nowhere near safe just yet. Millwall are clinging on to hopes of making it into the play-offs but they really need a victory here to enhance those chances.

Where to watch

The match is live on the Sky Main Event channel. The build up to the game begins at 7.45pm with the fixture kicking off at 8.15pm.

Charlton Athletic

As football was set to come out of lockdown Charlton Athletic looked to be in a world of trouble. Throughout the time the sport was cancelled there were rumblings in the boardroom and even now I’m not convinced anyone truly knows who owns the club, and then key players decided they were not going to risk injury ahead of moves away. That all led to most writing off the Addicks but we’ve seen over the last couple of seasons that it is dangerous to do that.

Lyle Taylor was clearly a big loss to the Londoners and with Jonathan Leko not around either it is clear that goals could be an issue. What they have done very well though is shore up at the other end and three games into the return of the season, they still haven’t conceded a goal which is a top effort. You could argue that wins over Hull and QPR didn’t amount to much but they got a creditable draw with Cardiff in midweek.

Millwall

If Charlton have come out of lockdown well, the same can’t be said for Millwall who have actually been quite ordinary. They were on the wrong end of a shootout sort of a match against Derby in their first match and since then have drawn with Barnsley and Swansea. To be fair to them none of those results look particularly bad based on what we have seen but at the same time they would have wanted more than two points from those three outings.

The Lions are clearly going to be disadvantaged in their remaining home games. Although The Den is nothing like as intimidating and daunting as it was to visit, the home fans still get a tune out of the side so them not being there is not going to help them. That means they need to take advantage of their trips away when things maybe are more in their favour, especially when they go to teams who are equally as reliant on their crowds.

Team News

Lyle Taylor has now left Charlton Athletic so he isn’t going to be involved anymore. David Davis and Chris Solly have also left. The Addicks will be hoping that Tomer Hemed and Adam Matthews are fit to feature.

Millwall are going to be without striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson who is out with an injury and they might be forced to do without loan signing Mason Bennett. He left the draw with Swansea early in midweek with a back issue and may not have recovered in time for this one.

Betting

This isn’t a match where bets jump off the page at us so if we are going to bet on it then we have to find some value that is for sure. I don’t feel comfortable backing Millwall at a price which is shortening by the minute. Charlton made a bunch of changes in midweek so if that gamble is because the Addicks have a small squad it is probably barking up the wrong tree. I think this match needs a bit of thinking out of the box and I’ve come up with one which offers up a bit of value.

That is on Millwall to win to nil. If a side does win this then there is a chance that it will be Millwall and should they do so I fancy they can keep a clean sheet in the process. They have been hard to break down away from The Den. They have kept clean sheets in six of their last nine away matches in the Championship with one of the ones they conceded in coming at Leeds but that fixture is never normal. For all that Charlton’s results have come up since lockdown, they have only scored two goals in their last six either side of the break and have no forwards coming back here. Millwall can keep it tight in defence and if they can grab something through a set-piece or Jed Wallace at the other end it could well be enough to win this one to nil.
