This crazy Championship season comes to an end on Wednesday night and after 45 matches we still have to fill the second automatic promotion spot, the last two play-off places and find out which three teams will be relegated.
It is all set up for an absolutely amazing finish to what has already been a highly dramatic campaign with so much still to play for, and so many of the fixtures on Wednesday having something on it. Two of those games are live on TV but I’m sure updates on all the games that matter will be readily available.
Wednesday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK TV in brackets)
Birmingham City v Derby County
Brentford v Barnsley (Sky Sports Mix)
Bristol City v Preston North End
Cardiff City v Hull City
Leeds United v Charlton Athletic
Luton Town v Blackburn Rovers
Millwall v Huddersfield Town
Nottingham Forest v Stoke City
Reading v Swansea City
Sheffield Wednesday v Middlesbrough
West Bromwich Albion v Queens Park Rangers (Sky Football)
Wigan Athletic v Fulham

Big Matches
This season has been so crazy that only one of the final day fixtures does not have anything on it. The TV matches centre round the race for the Premier League. West Bromwich Albion remain in the box seat for that and if they win their home match against Queens Park Rangers they will be back in the big time. If they slip up though Brentford will have the chance to overtake them and get into the Premier League. They would have to better West Brom’s result when they entertain second bottom Barnsley, who themselves need points to stay up. Should both West Brom and Brentford lose Fulham can pip them to second spot if they can conjure up a win away to Wigan Athletic, who sit virtually in the bottom three going into the night but who knows whether they are actually there or not.
Best of the Rest
There is so much more in play elsewhere on Wednesday night. Cardiff City sit in control of the final play-off place and if they win at home to Hull City they will get the chance to attempt to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt. Hull City know they have to win and hope a lot of results go their way else they will be a League 1 side next term. Assuming Wigan’s point deduction sticks, Luton Town are in control of their survival destiny. A win at home to Blackburn Rovers will see them stay up while Charlton will need to win at Leeds United to guarantee they survive. Technically Middlesbrough and Birmingham City are not yet safe. They travel to Sheffield Wednesday and host Derby County respectively.
Betting
As ever come the last day of the season we are faced with a card where those who need to win are significantly shorter than they would be at any other stage of the campaign so picking out bets is never easy. The one thing we have to remember is just because one team needs to win more than the other does not mean they will win. That is an important thing to consider either betting on singles or grouping teams needing to win in an accumulator. We’ll end the campaign with one bet.
Swansea City need to win and they probably are shorter than they should be but given how Reading have been at the Madejski Stadium since the restart, I still think they are an acceptable price at just below evens. If we put this simply, Swansea are a good side and Reading aren’t really. Only Hull City have picked up fewer points at home than Reading this season and the Tigers are in freefall. Since lockdown though Reading have drawn against Stoke and Huddersfield – hardly great results – and lost to Brentford and Middlesbrough, the latter certainly not great form. Swansea have only lost four on their travels this term and have a vibrant and attacking side and have a great chance of three points here.
