With the Premier League and Championship having the weekend off for the international break, our domestic betting focus heads to League One where a number of fixtures are still being fulfilled in the third tier of English football.
Seven matches have survived the international call ups to take place on Saturday, although we have to wait until Sunday for the televised offering this weekend. Nevertheless three valuable points are up for grabs on a day where the league gets a higher profile.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (All 3pm kick offs)
Blackpool v Rotherham United
Bristol Rovers v Milton Keynes Dons
Oxford United v Doncaster Rovers
Peterborough United v Lincoln City
Portsmouth v Gillingham
Rochdale v Accrington Stanley
Southend United v AFC Wimbledon
Big Matches
With five of the top six not in action on Saturday, Blackpool have the chance to enhance their early season position when they host a Rotherham United side who will be eager to build on their win last weekend to get themselves up closer to where they want to be. There is a big match at the foot of the table where the two sides immediately above Bolton Wanderers in the bottom three meet at Roots Hall where Southend United take on AFC Wimbledon.
Best of the Rest
Peterborough United will look to take advantage of most of the sides above them not playing this weekend when they host close rivals Lincoln City while Bristol Rovers will look to continue their surge in form against MK Dons. Oxford United are another side in good nick at the minute and they go up against a Doncaster Rovers side who are in a bit of a dip at the minute. Portsmouth will look to build on back-to-back wins when they host Gillingham while Rochdale take on Accrington Stanley.
Betting
I like three bets over the course of this card with the first of them coming from the Memorial Stadium where Bristol Rovers can see of an MK Dons side who are so open it is untrue. That is often a trait of Paul Tisdale’s sides anyway and that is very much the case with MK. Bristol Rovers are a side who can take advantage of that. In Jonson Clarke-Harris they have one of the hottest properties in the division and he’s in good touch, as are Rovers at home where they are undefeated this season. I expect the home side to win this.
I also expect the home side to win at Fratton Park where Portsmouth have finally found their feet and should kick on as a result of that. They take on Gillingham who are nothing special this season and who aren’t the best on the road. They’ve drawn three of their five away matches but should be out of their depth against a Portsmouth side who should be doing a lot better than they are. Portsmouth’s slow start to the season was a surprise and they can’t do anything about it now but they look like they’ve flicked the switch and that run of form can continue with a win against Gillingham.
Finally I like goals at London Road where Peterborough take on Lincoln City. Peterborough score bucket loads but they ship a decent number too while Lincoln’s defence has fallen apart since the Cowley brothers left. They do still have goals in them though which is encouraging. If Peterborough are on a going day they can cover 2.5 goals themselves but there is enough reason to think that Lincoln will also find the back of the net so I’m quite confident in taking the over here.
