The semi-final line up in the ATP Miami Open will be completed on Thursday when the final two quarter finals take place inside the Hard Rock Stadium on what has all the makings of an entertaining night of tennis.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and John Isner are already in the last four and four more men will be looking to join them including the overwhelming favourite for the tournament now in the form of Roger Federer.
Day Session
Denis Shapovalov vs Frances Tiafoe
The first match of the two on Thursday should be an absolute cracker as the young guns collide when Denis Shapovalov takes on Frances Tiafoe in an explosive looking contest between two men looking for their first Masters 1000 title.
I’ve been opposing Tiafoe all week but his movement on these slow courts has seen off every opponent he has faced so far and getting the ball past him will be an issue for Shapovalov but that works the same way for the American so I’m expecting the serve to dominate and a lengthy match as a result.
Both their previous meetings have been pretty long. Tiafoe won 75 64 in Delray Beach and Shapovalov won 76 36 75 in Cincinnati. Both meetings were last year so they hold some significance. If I had to choose I’d go with the slightly better movement of Tiafoe here but over 22.5 games looks the better way to go in a contest that has tiebreaks and a deciding set all over it.

Night Session
Kevin Anderson vs Roger Federer
The second match of the day, and the last of the quarter finals, sees Kevin Anderson continuing his comeback when he takes on a Roger Federer who went up a whole level in the previous round against Daniil Medvedev.
That was certainly the best performance we have seen on these courts this week and if Federer is at that level you’ve got to think he comes past the South African more than a shade comfortably. Even if he isn’t the Swiss star should be favoured by being accustomed to the Stadium Court, which Anderson competes on for the first time here.
I’m not sure Anderson is going to get the ball through the court as much as he would like here and it is significant that his only win over Federer was on a rock hard grass surface at Wimbledon last year, and even then he went 2-0 down in sets before coming back. That is the only time in six meetings that the two have played a tiebreak and that Federer has dropped a set against Anderson. In four hard court meetings Anderson has managed a total of 23 games in eight sets. Federer -3.5 is the play here.
