2019 BDO World Darts Championship Final – Scott Waites vs Glen Durrant Betting Preview

A wonderful week of BDO World Championship action at the Lakeside Country Club draws to a close on Sunday evening when Scott Waites goes up against the defending champion Glen Durrant for the title at the Surrey venue.

These two men have lifted the last three stagings of this tournament and that run will continue here. Both men go in search of a third world title, with Durrant looking to do his in a row which hasn’t happened since Eric Bristow did it back in the 80s.

Scott Waites

We’ve either seen brilliance from Scott Waites so far this week or we’ve seen bang ordinary. There hasn’t been any middle ground for the Yorkshireman and that has to be a concern heading into a final where common logic would dictate that he is going to be under pressure for large periods. That said we know Waites is a big time performer so nobody would be surprised if he brings his best game to the stage.

Waites has actually scored pretty well in this tournament to date but his finishing has been erratic at best and bordering on a shambles at other times. He isn’t going to outscore Durrant in this final so if he is going to have any chance of lifting this trophy again he is going to have to ensure he checks out to a decent percentage.

Glen Durrant

The Middlesbrough maestro went into the tournament as the number two seed but there isn’t a man, woman or any other creature alive that didn’t accept the fact that Durrant was the man to beat this week, and that is exactly how it has proven to be. He is yet to average below 93.90 to date and the only time he has been challenged is when he was 3-0 up on Scott Baker and switched off.

Durrant has been ploughing in the 180s and his finishing has been as good as ever. I get the feeling that the only thing that is going to deny ‘Duzza’ his own piece of history in what is likely to be his final ever BDO contest, is the magnitude of the achievement that sits in front of him. If he doesn’t overthink it he could be impossible to beat here.

Head to Head

These two have met on 10 previous occasions and it is Glen Durrant that holds a 7-3 victory so far including their last battle which came in the Finders Masters last month. Durrant has now won four of the last five meetings between these two although by and large they are generally tight contests. They have met twice in this tournament with Waites winning a final set decider in the 2016 quarter final and Durrant thrashing Waites 6-2 in the semi-final last year.

Betting

Scott Waites has had an excellent week so far but I don’t see him living with Glen Durrant in this final. Durrant has played his whole year for this match and I don’t expect him to pass it over from here on in. He has been the best player in this tournament and while that doesn’t always equate to success I think it does on this occasion.

Durrant’s scoring power is insanely strong in this code and his finishing is showing no sign of cracking. If the Middlesbrough man can get in front early I would imagine the pressure will begin to tell on Waites’ finishing and I can see Durrant easing away. I think he covers a 2.5 set handicap on a night which will crown him as one of the game’s greats.
