The European Championship concludes on Sunday with the quarter finals through to the title being won all on an excellent schedule of action out in Gottingen. We are already guaranteed a new winner of the tournament and whoever claims that crown will do wonders for their career.
Rob Cross goes into the final day of the tournament as the favourite to win it but with Gerwyn Price, Daryl Gurney, Michael Smith and others around it is not guaranteed he wins the title. We’ll preview the quarter finals here but time restrictions will deny us the opportunity to cover the latter stages, although our outright bet is still in which will hopefully remain the case to give us some extra interest.
Ricky Evans vs Rob Cross
The first quarter final could be classed as the biggest mismatch, at least on paper, as Ricky Evans in his first televised match at this stage of a tournament takes on the former world champion and current Matchplay winner Rob Cross.
Evans has taken advantage of his draw opening up to make it into this stage. In truth his two opponents haven’t really shown up against him but that isn’t his problem. He can only play his game and win if he is good enough however he has to significantly improve if he is going to trouble Cross in this contest. Evans has won one leg in 13 in their previous two meetings which doesn’t really bode well for him here. They were two years ago though. I reckon Cross will cover a 3.5 leg handicap but there isn’t a lot of margin for error so I’ll leave this one alone.
Dave Chisnall vs Daryl Gurney
The pick of the quarter final matches sees the fifth seed taking on the fourth seed as Dave Chisnall goes up against Daryl Gurney for a place in the semi-final later in the day. These two are classy campaigners so this should be a cracking contest.
This one is a pick ‘em match because they have both played some excellent darts in the tournament to date and I’m not sure which way it will go. I am fairly confident we are going to see a barrel load of 180s here though. Gurney ploughed in nine of them in the previous round and Chisnall made it into double figures so the 11.5 line here may not be high enough. Unless there is a spate of missed doubles this one is going to be close which should give us enough time to get this line covered.
Michael Smith vs Jeffrey de Zwaan
The third quarter final sees Michael Smith looking to continue his revival when he goes up against a man who is no respecter of reputation on the big stage in Jeffrey de Zwaan in what could become a compelling clash.
You would expect Smith to win this as much because he is the better player as his experience at this level but de Zwaan has a couple of wins over van Gerwen on the TV stage and he has beaten Peter Wright this weekend already as well. My gut feeling is that Smith will win this but it isn’t a massively strong though.
The bet I like here is for de Zwaan to contribute more than 5.5 180s to the mix. He has hit six and seven in his two wins so far and should get a really nice rhythm against Smith which should allow them to continue to flow. He groups the dart very well so if the first one is finding the 60 he should plough in the 180s.
Vincent van der Voort vs Gerwyn Price
The last match in the quarter finals sees Vincent van der Voort looking to continue what has already been a big weekend for the Dutchman when he takes on a Gerwyn Price who could be forgiven for thinking he is invincible after coming from 5-0 down in the previous round to win.
This one is all about who handles the pressure in my eyes and I expect that to be Price. Van de Voort deserves credit for making it this far but both his opponents have thrown in shockers against him and I don’t think Price will do that. Price is playing really well and he should win this with a bit in hand but he is my outright bet and I’m happy to use that as my betting interest in this one.
