The rain has had such an impact on the Fever-Tree Championships this week that we still haven’t finished the first round of the tournament yet, even though the majority of the second round will be played at Queens Club on Thursday.
Such is the backlog of matches that one player is going to feature on the card twice over the course of Thursday while there is also the return to action of Sir Andy Murray in the doubles. That means there is plenty to enjoy on a sparkling day where the forecast is much better at least.
Centre Court
A busy day on Centre Court begins with the defending champion in action as Marin Cilic takes on the diminutive star that is Diego Schwartzman in an interesting battle to start us off. Once they are finished the first round match between the top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and Kyle Edmund will finish. They are halfway through the second set so it shouldn’t be too long before the next of the second round matches is on court as Stan Wawrinka goes up against Nicolas Mahut. The last of the singles matches on the main court sees the winner of that Tsitsipas and Edmund contest taking on our pre-tournament pick Jeremy Chardy for a quarter final spot. The action concludes on Centre Court with Sir Andy Murray returning to action alongside Feliciano Lopez to take on Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.
Court 1
Three matches take place on the second of the courts with the play opening up with the number two seed Kevin Anderson taking to the court for the second time since his return from injury when he takes on Gilles Simon. The first round then concludes with the juicy looking clash between Grigor Dimitrov and Felix Auger-Aliassime in a match we have already previewed. The final match from the singles draw on this court sees Aljaz Bedene taking on the former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic for a spot in the quarter finals.
Court 2
A doubles match gets the action underway on the other court which holds singles action on Thursday. Those who do have ground passes for the day will get to see a couple of good singles matches. The first of them sees Nick Kyrgios in first round action against the lucky loser Roberto Carballes Baena before a second round meeting between Lucas Pouille and Daniil Medvedev which looks like it could be an entertaining contest.
Betting
I’m going to add one bet to the FAA punt we’ve been sat on for most of the week and that comes in the form of the opening match on Court 1 where Kevin Anderson and Gilles Simon meet for the sixth time in their careers. They are yet to meet in a match which hasn’t had a tiebreak or a deciding set so there are plenty of reasons to think we could be in for a lengthy encounter when they play on Thursday.
Both these men had to go three sets to set up their place in this second round clash so it isn’t asking a whole lot to see these two going the distance here. I’m not convinced there will be that many breaks of serve anyway. Anderson served well against Cameron Norrie but looked pretty rusty in the return game and that should see Simon hold serve well enough. This one looks like it will go past 23.5 games.
