The quarter finals of the French Open get underway inside the Roland Garros complex on Tuesday as the bottom half of the singles draws play down to the semi-final stage of the tournament across the channel in Paris.
While the women’s draw has lost a number of the top seeds thus far it has been the complete opposite for the men so we should get some high quality tennis on Tuesday and plenty of drama mixed in too.
Day 9 Recap
It promised to be a fantastic day of tennis on Monday but actually it turned out to be a largely disappointing one with facile victories for Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem while the other two men’s matches only went four sets. Simona Halep was an emphatic winner on a day where three of the four women’s matches were decided in straight sets.
It was a horrible day for us betting wise too with Gael Monfils not really showing up and Fabio Fognini going down in four sets despite winning the opening one. The most annoying loser was Sofia Kenin who only needed two games in the final set to bring her handicap in and instead was the recipient of a bagel. Hopefully Tuesday offers more luck.
Philippe Chatrier Court
We are down to just the two matches on each court now and the opening one on Chatrier will be a keen one for the British eyes to be on when Jo Konta takes on last year’s finalist Sloane Stephens for a place in the semi-final. Rafael Nadal then continues his title defence against a potentially jaded Kei Nishikori given that the Japanese star had to play the last two days in order to make it through to this quarter final.
Suzanne Lenglen Court
It might well be that the second court is where the majority of the attention is from the beginning of this match up. I say that because the action begins with the mouth-watering all-Swiss battle between Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka where all eyes will be on the latter to see how he is freshness wise after five gruelling sets with Stefanos Tsitsipas. Once they have settled their match it will be time for Marketa Vondrousova to try and continue her rise through the rankings when she meets the in form Petra Martic.
Betting
I’ll leave the Nadal match alone but I’ll get stuck into the other three matches with the game line looking low enough to attack in the match between Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. The line is 37.5 which you would expect these two to cover safely in four sets but I don’t think we should rule out a deciding set here. This might not be the Wawrinka which has won this title in the past but he is getting towards that level and I would imagine he will dominate the early exchanges before his legs catch up with him. Federer hasn’t been tested yet so there should be plenty from him in this match. It is hard to see it not occupying game number 38 at the very least. I’ll play the over.
I’m also going to play the over in the big women’s match of the day where Sloane Stephens takes on Jo Konta in what should be a high quality match between two women who have been in excellent form in this tournament thus far. These two met in Rome recently and went three sets and that is exactly what I think will happen here. The game line in this match is 21.5 so we would only need a couple of tight sets for this one to cover but both women are like dogs with bones in Grand Slams, both are in good nick on the clay and I really don’t see this being one-sided. I’m on the over here.
Finally I’ll play Petra Martic in the other match against Marketa Vondrousova. These two have met four times in the last 18 months and the Croatian has won the lot, with Vondrousova only winning one set in the nine they have played. The Czech ace has breezed through the draw so far but Martic only dropped 12 games in her first three matches before a titanic tussle with Kaia Kanepi in the last round. That showed the fight the Croatian has and it could be that heart and determination that wins the day here. The head-to-head is extremely in the favour of Martic and that is where my money is going at the prices.
