The German Masters gets underway with a largely quiet day of action inside the Tempodrom in Berlin on Wednesday, when just eight matches are scheduled across the two sessions of play out in Germany.
Although we have a shortage of matches we don’t go lacking for star names with the world champion Mark Williams and Masters winner Judd Trump part of a very appealing schedule throughout the opening day.
Afternoon Session
It is the world champion and indeed the man defending the title this week, Mark Williams, who gets things up and running on the TV table in the middle of the arena. He takes on Zhou Yuelong for a place in the last 16 of the tournament. There are two matches going on around the venue with Sam Baird facing Joe Perry in one of them and Yan Bingtao taking on Matthew Stevens in an interesting looking match in the other.
Evening Session
The Masters winner Judd Trump is the main man on the TV table on Wednesday evening. He takes on the competent Chinese player Li Hang for a place in the final 16. The outside tables will all be full of action in the first full session of the tournament. Peter Ebdon goes up against Shaun Murphy in a battle of the former world champions while Rory McLeod meets Kyren Wilson. The other two matches see Barry Hawkins facing Robert Milkins and Stephen Maguire going up against the Shootout champion Michael Georgiou.

Betting
I’ll go with a brace of bets to get the tournament up and running with. In the condensed afternoon session I like the look of Matthew Stevens to see off Yan Bingtao. The Chinese player is clearly talented but he has flattered to deceive an awful lot this term while Stevens looks to be coming back to his very best. In qualifying for this event he banged in four centuries in a match which is sensational scoring by any standards. Stevens has made a semi-final earlier this season and looks to be cueing nicely again. He is definitely where the value lies in this match.
Moving into the evening, I thought Shaun Murphy was set to turn his season around after his run to the final in Scotland but he was beyond ordinary in The Masters against Barry Hawkins and I feel compelled to take him on with Peter Ebdon. In fairness, even when Murphy was on it, these two were involved in some tight matches but with Murphy’s long game nowhere near the level we are accustomed to seeing it I expect Ebdon to keep the ‘Magician’ at range and mop up the opportunities that are left should Murphy miss. At 23/10 I think Ebdon is a decent bet.
Tips
Back M.Stevens to beat Y.Bingtao for a 4/10 stake at 2.38 with Coral
WON – Back P.Ebdon to beat S.Murphy for a 3/10 stake at 3.30 with Boylesports
