The first ranking event trophy of 2019 will be won on Sunday when Kyren Wilson meets Dave Gilbert in the final of the German Masters inside the wonderful Tempodrom in Berlin. A decent prize and the rewards that go with it is on the line in the two-session contest.
Both men have come through the draw pretty nicely throughout the week and look to be hitting the cue ball well. They have both competed in a ranking event final this season already so we should get a decent conclusion to what is always a good week.
Kyren Wilson
You got the feeling that the defeat to Judd Trump at The Masters might have been the kick up the backside that Kyren Wilson needed to ensure that he didn’t take the game lightly, and he has bounced back from that in some style this week. He has only dropped six frames on his way to this final and showed solid scoring at the right time and a good tactical brain at the same time.
Wilson has already won a title in Germany this season, landing the Paul Hunter Classic in the summer, so he will be out for the German double, to set him up nicely for the big ITV events that are looming on the horizon. It would also be a statement of intent in his rivalry with Judd Trump if he wins silverware so soon after his rival did.
Dave Gilbert
He is getting to a few ranking event finals these days is Dave Gilbert but he hasn’t got over the line in one yet. He might be forgiven for thinking that he will never get a better chance to get his nose in front than in the World Open final earlier in the campaign, when he led Mark Williams 9-5 only to lose 10-9 in a tough style.
He visibly wilted at the finish line in that tournament which has left its mark with me and I wonder if he will ever get over the line. If he is thinking that too then he only needs to look back to see Anthony Hamilton and Martin Gould won the biggest titles of their career to date here. On the bright side he is playing good snooker and he’s scoring well which is vitally important.
Head to Head
This is only the third time these two will have met in their career and one of those was in the Championship League which barely counts. The one that did count was back in 2014 in the Shanghai Masters and both are hugely better players now so I’m not even sure that those encounters are going to hold any sway on this contest. The big thing could be that Wilson has won three tournaments in total while Gilbert goes in search of his first one.

Betting
I’m not going to predict the outcome of this final, or even how many frames we will see in it, but there is one bet that I like in this match and it comes in the form of the highest break where I think Dave Gilbert is grossly overpriced to land the best knock of the day at the general 6/4 quotes on offer.
Wilson has only made two breaks more than 81 in the entire tournament to date whereas Gilbert has ploughed in a ton in each of his last three matches. Prior to coming to this event he banged in the 147th 147 break in the Championship League so he is clearly cueing very nicely. He has always been a fluent scorer, whereas Wilson has to work a little harder on his scoring, so I think Gilbert is value to land the high break here. One ton could be enough for him to land the bacon in this final.
