The quarter finals of the Grand Slam of Darts get underway on Friday night when the bottom half of the draw determines their semi-final line up in Wolverhampton on a night where four of the best in the world will battle it out for a spot in the last four.
We have to wait until Saturday night for the likes of Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson to showcase their talents again but Dave Chisnall, Peter Wright, Michael Smith and Glen Durrant will ensure the quality is high on Friday evening.
Dave Chisnall vs Peter Wright
The opening quarter final of the tournament could be a potential classic as the recent World Grand Prix finalist Dave Chisnall takes on a man whose record here is not the best in Peter Wright over a great 31 leg distance for a spot in the semi-finals.
These two are both brilliant scorers so the winner is likely to be the man who hits his doubles the best over the course of the match. You would think that both would have peaks and troughs in that department so the one who minimises the misses should get the job done. That is all guesswork though and I’m on Chisnall outright anyway so I’m happy to leave the match outcome alone but I will take one bet.
That comes in the form of the 180s from Wright. Since the end of the Premier League, Wright has been hitting a lot of 180s and although he hasn’t done much of it in this tournament, he hasn’t had a tough match yet through opponents either not being good enough or not turning up on the night against him. Chisnall will which should see us go into the latter 20s for legs so a line of 6.5 will only require Wright to hit a 180 every 3.5-4 legs or so and maybe not even that. I’m happy he’ll achieve that.
Glen Durrant vs Michael Smith
There will be no love lost in the second quarter final on the night when Glen Durrant takes on a Michael Smith who has had a little too much to say about his opponent in this match, adding to the spice of it before it starts.
I think it is fair to say that we haven’t seen the best of Durrant in this tournament, although in the final six legs or so of his win over Gabriel Clemens in the previous round we did get to see why he is the champion he is. Suddenly he found some consistency and got the job done. Michael Smith has breezed into this quarter final with a barrage of big scores and more importantly a much stronger double percentage than what we have seen from him previously when he has been struggling.
The niggle between the two should ensure this is a decent match but I like Smith to come through with a bit in hand. The two met over a similar distance to this in the semi-final of the World Matchplay and Smith triumphed 17-10 and while it might be a little closer here with Durrant fresher than he was then, I still expect Smith to come through based on his form of the week.
