The 119th US Open champion will be crowned in California on Sunday night, or the early hours of Monday morning for those of us who are in the UK, when a stellar leaderboard goes off in search of the third major of the year.
We have a nice blend of top class superstars and potential first-time major winners right in the mix heading into what has all the makings of being a special Sunday on the picturesque and iconic Pebble Beach track.
Round 3 Recap
Gary Woodland went into the third round with a two shot lead and although he saw his advantage halved it is he who will begin the final round in front. He sits on 11 under par with Justin Rose a shot further back. That pair are clear of a trio of men on seven under that includes the defending champion Brooks Koepka. Rory McIlroy is another shot behind him with some great players all within seven of the lead heading into the final 18 holes.
It was another excellent day for us on the match betting front. Haotong Li finally got the better of Jason Dufner in a two ball that had plenty of twists and turns while Xander Schauffele thrashed Sergio Garcia to deliver an outstanding profit which we can still enhance over the course of the final day of the tournament.
Sunday Betting
There are a couple of markets to have a look at over the course of Sunday with the winner market and one without the front two both priced up. I was hoping to get a fair price on Brooks Koepka and then I would have got involved but understandably he is pretty tight in the betting. I’m tempted to have a dabble in some shape or form on Chez Reavie who I’m not convinced will go away but he’s out alongside Koepka which might be a daunting experience.
In the end, I’ve decided to leave the betting on these markets alone. I have Matt Wallace in the top 10 and while winning the tournament is probably beyond him I’m hopeful that he can fire something under par on Sunday and deliver me a place which will do me in a tournament in which the course has played completely different to expectation.
Sunday 2 Balls
That leaves us with the two balls to accommodate out betting on Sunday. The final group out onto the golf course is the same as on Saturday, with Gary Woodland and Justin Rose teeing off at 22.30 BST with Brooks Koepka and Chez Reavie out 11 minutes before then. As ever there are some appealing groups earlier in the day to be enjoyed, especially as the TV coverage begins 3.5hrs before the leaders tee off.
Phil Mickelson and Charles Howell III go out at 17.33 BST while Sergio Garcia and Jordan Spieth tee off at 19.01 BST. Tiger Woods will form much of the early coverage when he is out alongside Marc Leishman at 19.56. I don’t like betting in the early matches on a Sunday as a rule so there is only one bet which interests me in this final round.
Rory McIlroy vs Louis Oosthuizen
Match tee off at 22.08 BST
The third last group out onto the golf course sees Rory McIlroy taking on Louis Oosthuizen in a clash between two men who have won major titles before. Oosthuizen is actually a shot ahead of McIlroy going into the final round.
That might mean that the South African doesn’t have to push the boat out as much as McIlroy here in order to get right into the mix. McIlroy is in the position whereby he has to find birdies early on but the danger is that he pushes too much and puts himself in trouble. I don’t see Oosthuizen changing too much here. He is putting so well that middle of most of these greens will give him every chance of picking up shots and he is more than good enough to play that sort of golf. Even on a level footing Oosthuizen is overpriced for this two ball but given that McIlroy is going to have to press the risk button I really like the 2010 Open champion to deliver the goods here. He is streets ahead on strokes gained putting this week and that can be another difference between the two.
