The quarter final line up in the singles draw at the US Open will be finalised on Monday when the remaining eight men’s and women’s matches are played out. It is Labor Day in America so the New York crowds will be packed in for some good tennis.
There are some huge names taking to the court on the holiday day out in the Big Apple so everything is there for a great day as the likes of Naomi Osaka, Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils look to book their spots in the last eight.
Day 7 Recap
We saw pretty easy victories for the two giant names in the day session when Roger Federer and Serena Williams powered through for the loss of just 11 games between them. Elsewhere there were day session wins for Daniil Medvedev, Grigor Dimitrov and Jo Konta while Qiang Wang sent the French Open champion Ash Barty on her way home. In the evening session Elina Svitolina came past Madison Keys while Novak Djokovic’s shoulder injury finally caught up with him.
It was a day that began nicely for us betting wise with the Konta and Pliskova match sailing safely beyond the 21.5 game mark but then it turned sour as Alex de Minaur didn’t really turn up against Grigor Dimitrov and the old Madison Keys showed up against Elina Svitolina and couldn’t have played into her hands any more if the Ukrainian had been controlling her. If that wasn’t annoying enough we missed out on a certain winner with Wawrinka when Djokovic quit.

Arthur Ashe Stadium
The defending champion Naomi Osaka is first up on the main court on Labor Day as she looks to take her title defence into the quarter finals. She faces up to a woman who has a good history on Ashe herself in Belinda Bencic and who has already beaten the Japanese star twice this year. The men’s match in the day session sees the number six seed Alexander Zverev looking to make it through when he takes on the former quarter finalist here in Diego Schwartzman, a man who is yet to lose a set in this tournament.
The night session looks a great one with two former champions getting things underway as the men take centre stage first up. Rafael Nadal meets Marin Cilic in a clash of styles. We have another clash of styles in the second game as the baseline powerhouse that is Bianca Andreescu once again looks to lay down her title credentials when she takes on a Taylor Townsend who will be seen at the net quite a bit based on previous evidence.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
The weather forecast for New York is not the best on Monday so wisely the other four singles matches are all being played on the other court with a roof. The first of those sees Donna Vekic taking on Julia Goerges in a good looking contest, although all four games are that to be fair. The Russian star Andrey Rublev will look to make it back into the quarter finals in the second of the games on show here.
There has been plenty of American hype thrown round in this tournament so far but not so much of it has gone in the direction of Kristie Ahn but she can make the quarter final of her home slam if she can beat Elise Mertens while the final match of the day sees Gael Monfils looking to follow his girlfriend into the last eight of the competition when he meets the unheralded Pablo Andujar in the late afternoon game.

Men’s Betting
I’m going with a couple of bets over the course of the day in the men’s draw with the first of them coming on an ever drifting Alexander Zverev. It is well-known now that the German has never really lived up to the hype in the Grand Slams but the one thing you can’t fault him for this week is not sticking in and gutsing it out and slowly but surely his form looks to be improving along the way. We shouldn’t ignore the huge physical advantages he has on Diego Schwartzman in stature and power even if he has been on court longer here. The Argentine hasn’t dropped a set in the tournament yet but at number 72, Tennys Sandgren is the highest ranked player he has faced so he’s deeply up in class here. This is going to turn into a right battle you would think so Zverev’s battle hardened first week may be no bad thing. It will only turn into a battle if Schwartzman can soak up the power though. If he can’t the German should win this much like he won their last meeting in Paris last year.
Matteo Berrettini is going to be big on the scene over the next couple of years but he’ll need to improve his movement a little first and I think it is that weakness of his game which Andrey Rublev can expose and come through here. Rublev was tough as teak in the previous round against Nick Kyrgios, a man with plenty of power that the Russian absorbed and struck when the time was right and it wasn’t a Kyrgios up to no good, he just wasn’t good enough. Rublev looks to be hitting the ball very sweetly and the longer this one goes on the more dominant I expect him to get. Rublev is being asked to give up 3.5 games but with tiebreaks a concern I’ll take him to win no worse than 3-1.
Women’s Betting
There is one bet I like over the course of the day in the women’s draw too. Julia Goerges was good to me in the first round and I’m seeing no reason to oppose her against Donna Vekic who she holds a 3-0 advantage over, not to mention a significant power stranglehold too. Not many seemed to expect the German to beat Kiki Bertens in the previous round but I wasn’t surprised as I took her as an outsider then and I’m happy to do so again here. Vekic is decent enough but she can be a little too erratic for too long at the top level for my liking. If this was a grass court I might think twice but it isn’t so I like Goerges in this one.
Daily Accumulator
This is probably our last chance to get involved in a daily accumulator this week with the singles matches being down to just four per day after Monday. There’s enough doubles play on show to make up one to go at on the eighth day of the event though.
Rublev win
Osaka win
Andreescu 2-0
Dabrowski/Pavic win
