2019 US Open Tennis – Men’s Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

We had the women’s semi-finals in the US Open on Thursday night and on Friday afternoon and evening the focus in New York heads to the men’s event, as we find out which two men will battle it out for the final Grand Slam title of 2019 on Sunday night.

Serena Williams and Bianca Andreescu will be back for the women’s final on Saturday evening but before then the likes of Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev will look to book their own spots in the title weekend.

Daniil Medvedev vs Grigor Dimitrov

Two men who will be looking for a place in their first Grand Slam final meet in the opening semi-final of the day when Daniil Medvedev takes on Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian is back in the big time but he does have the advantage of having been to this stage of a major before whereas Medvedev samples semi-final tennis for the first time.

On all form this season you would think Medvedev is a good thing in this semi-final but I don’t sense Dimitrov has come this far only to give up the ghost now and so this could easily turn into something of a physical and athletic tussle and that might just favour the Bulgarian given that Medvedev has played so much tennis in recent times and even two days off might not have cured his ailing body.

I don’t see this one being won in straight sets so over 38.5 games is of definite interest to me. Both men are playing good tennis but there is a vulnerability to Medvedev, who like Dimitrov surely hasn’t come this far to jack it all in without a fight. That line looks low in a four or five setter and I just think the longer it goes on the fresher man has to have a chance so I’ll have a little piece of Dimitrov too.

Matteo Berrettini vs Rafael Nadal

The second match of the semi-final night sees the overwhelming favourite to win the tournament now in Rafael Nadal taking on a man who has surprised everyone including himself so far this week in Matteo Berrettini in what is their first career meeting.

I like the Italian and the game he brings to the table with a huge serve and a massive forehand but the problem with that is that his weaknesses are the very things Nadal naturally plays too as in the backhand and movement. When you throw in natural nerves at this stage of the competition you have to be more than a shade concerned for the Italian here.

I’m expecting Nadal to win this semi-final and logic would suggest he’ll do so in straight sets as well but he was complaining of stomach cramps and illness after his quarter final so I’m not sure I want to be on a man whose body regularly lets himself down. At the same time, Berrettini continues to surprise and would it really be the biggest shock if he gets inspired for half an hour like Cilic and Schwartzman did and win a set? Probably not. I’ll leave this alone.
